    I thought it best to give the news. It is with sadness that I tell you my father, Douglas R. Mason (John Rankine) has passed away. He will be deeply missed. Powys published new editions of his original Space 1999 novels ‘Phoenix of Megaron’ and ‘Android Planet’.

    Douglas R. Mason 26th Sept 1918 – 8th Aug 2013. Aged 94.

    Thanks for sharing this. The books of John Rankine were a big part of my life when I was growing up. I remember getting so many of his books at second hand book shops when I was scouring the shelves for Space 1999 novelisations. I will dig out some of those books and read them this week in memory of a great man and author.

    Sad news indeed, but what a legacy he left behind… dozens of novels and short stories. He will be remembered, and his works enjoyed, for many, many years to come.

    Damn. Another GIANT of my formative reading years is gone after 94 years, [i]but what a legacy he leaves behind[/i].

    John,

    I’m sorry to hear this – he had a good and long life though, and his work will live on! I hope you can take comfort from this.

    I corresponded with him many years ago and still have the letter. Always loved his [i]Space: 1999[/i] novels and – in particular – [b]Android Planet[/b], which I read and re-read many times (even more so with the new Powys version!). I was always disappointed that he never got the opportunity to write another original other than [b]Android Planet[/b] and [b]Phoenix of Megaron[/b] (the latter which I imported from the USA at huge expense some years after it was first published there…).

    RIP. And my deepest condolences to you and the rest of his family.
