ParticipantIs there a certain order that the Powys Space:1999 books should be read in? I own them all, and before I dive in I want to see if there is a chronological order I should be following.
Thanks!

ParticipantThe order I recommend is.
1. Resurrection
2. The Forsaken
3. Survival
4. Shepherd Moon (collection of short stories. Two essential stories to read before the following novel are “The Astelian Gift” and “Spider’s Web” for continuity sake. But you check out the other stories. They are well worth the time !
5. Born for Adversity
6. Omega
7. AlphaSPECIAL NOTE: Do not forget to check out Eternity Unbound ! It is a marvelous work of Gothic science fiction, profound and superbly poetic.

KeymasterYou might want to read Year Two before Shepherd Moon. Though it is not “new” material, it links to the previous Powys books and Year One and forshadows Born for Adversity.
Character-wise, you get a lot of insight into John Koenig in the Year Two omnibus. There is a short piece called Lambda Variance which is an important link, I feel.
But I think David’s list is spot on.

ParticipantI got a lot out of the year two omnibus, not just because of the little extras but more the fact that the stories were presented in the correct order and had new material to reflect this.

KeymasterA funny thing about the Year Two omnibus. Michael Butterworth and I arranged the episodes to follow Helena’s Status Report dates, though we didn’t include the actual reports or dates. This was done because we wanted to respect the ORDER but not the actual day-counts. Some episodes took place before Dragon’s Domain! Some took place within a week of each other in different star systems, and we all know that there was a VAST gap between TBOW part 1 and TBOW part 2.
The funny thing is this: Maya’s abilities seem to increase as the episodes go along, as if she is slowly mastering her skill with molecular transformation. I may be wrong, but I seem to remember this surprising me at the editing stage.
