I know exactly what you mean Pat. Especially if his mouse happens to slip… 😉

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to this, but I have been a tad busy. Life got in the way for a while there.

There are several things that make fan-fiction what it is and we are all painfully aware of exactly what those things are so I won’t bother to go into them. I will simply state that we read fan-fiction despite those things and enjoy it nonetheless.

There are several things that make fan-fiction unreadable for me and these are the things that I will spend a little time on.
    – Mary Sue syndrome. This is where the author decides to write themselves into the story as a fabulous new character who has all of the simply brilliant ideas and saves the day, the girl/guy, the base, the moon, and the universe all by themselves.
    – Unicorns. Need I say more? I guess I’d better or you might not truly understand. The one thing that jars me back to reality (and it may just be me) is when the heros are exploring a strange alien planet and come accross a perfect idyllic valley with lush green grass, a bubbling stream, lots of trees heavily laden with exotic fruits and berries. The perfect location for the new city of Alpha… A light rustling in the tress and the Alphan’s are amazed to see a herd of Unicorns coming down to drink. This also applies to Gryphons, mermaids, centaurs and any other mythical creature made up by someone else.
    – Girly frock syndrome. Any time a story takes 3 pages to describe what everyone is wearing you know you are in fora truly boring time.

Unfortunately I seem to keep encountering these things. I have half read a lot of fan-fiction stories and I’m beginning to understand why Matteo and co don’t want any unsolicited material from any one.

Oh Bill, your hints into alternate realities are so tantalizing. It will be interesting to see how the stories develop over time, if they develop that is.

@ Pat – The very idea of Kano playing chess with a computer embodied version of himself was too funny, the conversations I imagined are keeping me amused for hours…

I agree Pat, it would have been a bit of overkill if everyone had returned for year three. Maybe the ATAP Alphans were married and their spouses were still alive on Alpha. Certainly the ATAP Morrow was married to Sandra so he couldn’t have come unless he either abandoned his wife, or brought her along with him thus dooming one of the Sandras to certain death. I do think Kano could have come along though, it would have been nice for him to renew his relationship with his one true love, computer. I would also be nice if, by accident or design he was now permanently linked to computer via telepathic link his alternate set up whilst trapped… It would make for an interesting plot element to have an alternate means of communication with computer and the base.

I think I09 was comparing the huge difference between seasons one and two of Space 1999. The changes were overwhelming and the show suffered badly because of it. I agree that there are some good story elements in year two but apart from the name of the show and four regular cast members just about everything else was changed and not for the better. I used to love the fact that every episode of year one left me with a question of either morals or science. I used to spend hours pondering just what those questions could have meant for the Alphans. Year2, every episode left me with a cheap, forced laugh.
My list of the ten worst seasons of TV would not include Space either, but I do understand where they are coming from.

Pretty well placed in my opinion. Compared to season one the show was just awful. The dumbing down of the stories and the introduction of some of the worst monster effects seen on TV for a long time. Made season two such a disappointment for me. Mind you, it might get pushed off that list after they see the most recent season of Dr Who… 😉

Thanks for your tireless efforts Mateo and the Powys team. I know we’re a pack of whingers who all want the books to appear as quickly as we can read them but we do appreciate each and every page of each and every book that you guys produce.

Damn Bill, I thought you were joking.

Brell Star Christmas ornaments… The mind boggles at the possibilities. Now I have to work out how many I will need to form an invasion force for the Christmas tree.

Happy Dance? Perhaps a short Jig for y’all.

🙂 :cheer:  :woohoo: :silly: :woohoo:  :cheer: 🙂 :cheer:  :woohoo: :silly: :woohoo:  :cheer: 🙂 :cheer:  :woohoo: :silly: 😛 :silly: :woohoo:  :cheer: 🙂 :cheer:  :woohoo: :silly: 😛 :silly: :woohoo:  :cheer: 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 That’s enough, I’m getting dizzy. Bill’s not the messiah, he’s a very naughty boy… 😉

Building up our hopes like that. No firm release dates, no clue which book it will be, we are no better off that we were before… It’s like alpha is crossing a void where nothing is happening that is newsworthy, or their transmissions are being blocked by some evil alien or other. 🙁

Well, if I’m not getting my fix from Mateo and co, I’ll get it from anywhere else I can. Even if that means reading FF. If Powys read of my sad and pathetic plight they may relelnt and give me a nice shiny new novel… 🙂

I wasn’t talking about Children of the Gods, I was making a general comment on time travel stories. I just rambled on a bit and went off topic and forgot my original point. I do that when I write these things in the office and constantly get interupted by real life… 😉

Ahhh, I only half remembered the story, I will have to find out where I got my info (not from the Catacombs) it may have been from a magazine article. That will mean going through my scrapbooks until I find it. The story I got was much less detailed than what the Catacombs has. It’s funny, no matter how well you think you’ve scoured the Catacombs there is still more to find.

I always have trouble with time travel stories and TV shows. I know that Space 1999 to all intent and purposes is no longer a TV show but to me it is and always will be. My biggest problem is that every time a time travel story deals with the future of the existing characters you’re locked to that future. Problem is, it never works out that way. Then comes the feeble “parallel universe” or “time paradox” excuses that never really cut it for me. That’s a problem that this story always presented to me. At least this one showed people from so far in the future that it didn’t really matter but it still troubled me, why would you travel back and meddle in your own past to possibly destroy your own existence? If that was the case why not go back and stop Breakaway and save everyone?
I still look forward to each and every book and grumble at each and every thing that doesn’t match the “Zackiverse”, at the same time I will rejoice in the knowledge that another book on the shelf makes the Space 1999 universe that little bit bigger.
Now, Bill, get back to work. We would all like a nice shiny new book on our bookshelves for Christmas please. Oh and some of those Brell Christmas tree ornaments you promised us. 🙂

Don’t put yourself down too much Bill, remember one very important thing; we Space 1999 fans are hungry for anything new in our beloved universe. The mythology surrounding Children of the Gods has been out there for many years and we all have our ideas of what it is about and where it fits in both the Powysverse and our own ‘idealised’ 1999 universe where we are god and have everything happy and cosy. The most important thing here is that you deliver a book that both you and Mateo are happy with. Hopefully Johnny’s family will also be happy that his legacy is expanded in this way. The fans will by it anyway, just to have it and hold it in their eager little hands and devour every word before picking holes in the plot and ticking you off for your spelling and punctuation mistakes.
But this little Zack will savour and love each and every word because the universe I loved for so much of my life is just that little bit bigger with each and every story. It doesn’t matter if the story isn’t what I hope for, if that’s what I wanted I would write them myself. I want to be surprised or even shocked by a story, I mourn the loss of every Alphan, and wince as each Eagle is destroyed. But I know that the Space 1999 univers is richer for each and evey Powys novel that is released and for that I say thankyou to everyone at Powys.

Breakaway Part 2 was indeed the name of the story Steve. I can also recommend “What Lies Beneath” which was a revelation.
