I finally managed to start listening to the audio book today. It took a few goes to get it to play through, it kept stopping after each chapter… Once i fixed that though it was smooth sailing. Thanks for the intro music, nice touch. 🙂
I only managed chapter one today but I know this story and Barry Morse’s magnificent performance is one to savour. I little every now and then will do me nicely. Thankyou so much for this Powys, it has brought the show back to life just that little bit more.

You could try getting the region 4 version, it is an exact copy of the network release. Try ezydvd.com.au they do international orders.

Sigh… still waiting. It is mighty cold out here by the mail box. 🙁 One of the problems with living at the bottom of the planet…

Hi Mateo, I was wondering where the other stand-alone books published in the 1970s fit in to the Powys Universe? Alien Seed, Android Planet, Rogue Planet and The Phoenix of Megaron to be exact, are they considered by you to be cannon or have you discarded them? There is also a series of 6 German books that follow on from the end of season 2, which I am struggling to read (armed with a German/English dictionary and Babel fish for the more obscure words) which I know can not possibly be considered cannon. But since the Omega/Alpha books contradict some aspects of Message from Moonbase Alpha I thought it could do with some clarification. Many thanks for your time.

The Network version is better than the US 30th anniversary version. Much much better.

Oh, I forgot to mention all of the extras, almost worth it for them alone. I think I have 12 different version of Space 1999 on DVD. German, Italian, French, Australian, US and UK… Just for the extras. On the Network disk there are some interesting unused effects shots, some nice interviews, Gerry Anderson comentaries (I’m at work so I don’t have my disks handy) I can’t think of anything else… Oh, a nice variation on the Fanderson Doumentaries with a different cut on the interviews. Hey, be like me get them all.

To anyone in North America who doesn’t have the Network release all I can say is that you are missing out big time. When I got my Network release the quality difference was as good as going from VHS to DVD. The picture source is from the original film stock and actually has more of each frame in view, it is like the previous DVD releases were zoomed in slightly. Also the sound is in 5.1 surround which gives a much better effect, especially with that oh-so-special Barry Gray music. 🙂
I recently tried an experiment where I watched the Network release zoomed on my wide screen TV to remove the “pillar boxed” side bars, it’s true I lost some of the top and bottom of the picture but, for all but a few scenes the effect was that of a perfectly framed wide screen picture. The added picture quality also helped as there was no appreciable grainyness that can be evident when using the zoom function on some DVDs.
If you are a ‘true fan” as I guess most of us are (or we wouldn’t be here) please invest in the Network release and when you do drop them a line about season two, then they might pull their collective finger out and release it too. 😉

I must say that I loved the year two omnibus. The book is very impressive and beautifully laid out. I was initially hesitant about the purchase but decided that I would get it to support Powys who were bringing back a saga that I loved. I have every other paperback that has been put out and as many hard covers as I could find. I’m not sure I would have bothered with another set of paper back books.

Hmmm, would love to attend but Australia is a bit far from both options. 🙁 Especially for an informal restaurant gathering. If you do go ahead have a great time. I am envious of you all for being able to get together in this way. I’m still waiting for any of my friends to finish any of the books…. 🙁 Thank god or a MUF alien for this forum so I can at least talk about the books to someone. Mind you if you are in Australia and want to catch up, just let me know.

It’s a good thing that the Alphans destroyed the Guardian of Piri or you might have had to re-watch that as well… 😉

I wouldn’t have thought there would be any wreckage on the Moon. Wouldn’t the Alphans be out there scavenging every last scrap of usable material. They were always talking about being short of supplies and materials. Also, any alien wreckage would be of immense interest to the large group of scientists on the base. Any scrap of new science that could be gathered would be of immense help to the Alphans trying to survive in a hostile universe.
