To add on to my last post now that dinner is over… Yum! 🙂

If you imagine yourself in the universe of the MUF it would have been an overwhelming place for us. Everyquestion istantly answered by a billion trillion overlapping minds. Every idea instantly debated, decided, voted upon and enacted. But why ideas in a universe of pure thought? Why a new idea? No wonder the Black Sun MUF thought a thought every million years and barely had a thing to say to John and Victor. The would have had no frame of reference, no “how’s the weather, or the health.” Their universe is so alien that I’m surprised they could interact with us at all. Their early encounters would probably have gone something more like the alien in the Immunity Syndrome, not even aware that their very presence was killing those they encountered.
Each and every MUF must have gone insane when exposed to our new empty alien universe. All alone, no answers to the questions, ideas and theories. If they had a thought every million of our years they would scarcely have adapted to our universe before the war started. Having to figure everything out all by themselves without their whole gestalt universe to instantly supply every answer, no wonder they made so many simple idiotic mistakes. Unfortunately they remided me a bit of the Q… 🙁

I finished re-reading Omega/Alpha today and I have to wonder about a few things.

What would be the impact on the thought universe of the re-introduction of a mind separated for so long. The introduction of all of the new ideas and concepts learned in our universe could just about destroy them… That might be interesting to explore in a future short story.
When I was watching the original episodes I formed and retained the idea of the MUFs as very god-like. This clouded my vision somewhat when I first read these books. This time I read them with the idea that they weren’t all that god-like but were just all powerfull, all seeing average schmoes from another universe. Not very intelligent. Makes for a much better read all around.
I will post more on this but my dinner is ready, and I’m hungry. 😛

Yay! Arrived home to find two Lulu packages on the doorstep… Android planet is here, the thrill of opening a package to find a crisp, clean, white-paged new Space 1999 book. Ahhhh that fresh, new-book smell when you first open it.

    You know what that means… H A P P Y – D A N C E

I remember buying two copies of that book to get the two covers, each one had its own meaning and I thought that one or the other would appeal to me more when I got them. Neither has so far. I must confess to buying two copies of each book anyway, just in case one gets damaged, or lost, or stolen, or.. or… or… So I actually may have 4 copies of that one, two of each cover. Just the crazy antics of a Space:1999 nut. :woohoo: :silly: :woohoo:
I did only buy one copy of the year 2 omnibus though, even my mind, fevered though it was at new Space books, draws the line at some things… 😉

I’ll give you Android Planet, but the others are reprints so they don’t count… 😛

You’re still on track for the book of the month club for me anyway. So far I have received one book in January (Chasing the Cyclops) and you have a week to scrape in my February book if Android Planet arrives…

Such a blistering pace, can you keep it up?

I had some trouble with my order, I was trying to use a discount coupon and every time I used it I was redirected and an error would cause my web browser to shut down. I contacted Lulu and they gave me another code which caused the same error. I tried ordering without the code and it went through. The kind folks at Lulu gave me a refund equal to the amount of the discount…

Personally I love the double space at the end of each sentence, it suits my aging eyes. What I would request is a little more space in the centre spine margin. It is so very hard to read and I am living in fear of snapping the centre spine… Surely a far greater tragedy than how many spaces to use at the end of a sentence. 😉

Firstly, let me say that I don’t disagree with what Powys are doing, I love it! The more Space 1999 there is out there the better off we are. Anything that will promote dicussion and debate about Space 1999 is fine with me. I’m just used to thinking in my own way with my own theories and ideas. I have spent many years watching and reading and each time it reinforced my theories.
The biggest problem I have with the Powys novels is the ATAP Alphans. In my mind that story took place in a parallel universe, the title is the biggest clue. Another Time, Another Place. Not our place, another place. If the MUF was capable of splitting the entire moon and its inhabitants to return them to Earth, why not do it more? It could have split the alphans when they were on Retha and left Humans disguised as stone age people. Or split the moon at Arkadia and left 300 people there, etc, etc, etc… It would have been a boring story-line but it makes more sense in the Powysverse.
I also have an issue with the killing of the original Luke and Anna. Sandra mentions them in MFMBA so that means that they, to her at least, are still alive. I know why it was done, and all of the reasons for it and I agree with the intention. If I had done it I would have included a scene between the ATAP Luke and Anna with Sandra to create a bond between them. That would have created a connection between them and Sandra that would have warranted a special mention in what was a very emotional speech for Sandra. Maybe she could have given them some personal effects belonging to the original Luke and Anna that were left behind when they left for Arkadia.
On the plus side, I loved what was done with Balor, Paul and Tanya, Victors death and subsequent ressurection, the restoration of Main Mission, Maya’s powers being withdrawn and the addition of Hawks to Alpha. All of these are positive moves that have improved the series no end and fixed the biggest mistakes of Year Two.
I see the publication of Omega and Alpha as a way of explaining everything to everybody all at once. I just don’t understand why it was necessary to do it at all. The mystery was what drew me to Space 1999 in the first place. The Alphans may have been able to explain what happened to themselves if they had the time or the resources, but they didn’t have either. So the mysteries were left behind for us, the viewers, to ponder and muse over. I’m very glad that Powys didn’t just have one MUF responsible for the whole shebang or I would have been even angrier.
I have had to separate Space 1999 into Three universes now I have called them; The universe of Earthfall, The Zackiverse and The Powysverse. I’m happy and can continue to be so.

    🙂

At this rate we will all be requesting that the original novelisations be reprinted with shiny new covers and uncreased spines if only to make our bookshelves look all neat and tidy. After all where do we put this book? Next to the old Android planet? That just doesn’t seem right somehow. I think I will be the first to request a full reprinting of all of the original novelisations based upon the Year one and two omnibuses so we can have a nice new shelf of crisp, white paged, uncreased spine shiny new books with spectacular new and exiting covers… 🙂

Something to think about Mateo… 😛
