I see him. Hey, some of thse aren’t robots they’re androids. If they are including androids in the pic they’ve missed a few…
You’re absolutely right Zack… saying that though, the only omission I can think of is the unforgettable ORAC from Blake’s 7!
The final draft of The Whispering Sea by John Kenneth Muir was turned in this morning! We are hoping to have Phoenix of Megaron AND The Whispering Sea out by Christmas…In case anyone is interested, this new draft of The Whispering Sea is a greatly expanded work–so you’ll all have something meaty to chew on during the cold winter months!
Mateo
Wonderful news! I’d better start saving my pennies then… 😉 thanks for the update Mateo. Much appreciated
Steve FosterParticipantHere’s the low down via The Catacombs website as to what Johnny said about CotG:
http://www.space1999.net/catacombs/main/crguide/vcwbcotg.html
Time-travel stories wise, I must admit, there’re a number of Star Trek episodes that feature time travel that I really like.
“City on the edge of Forever” (TOS), “Yesterday’s Enterprise” (TNG), the wonderful “Trials and Tribble-ations” & “Children of Time” (DS9) along with the stunning “Year of Hell – Parts 1 & 2” & “Relativity” (VGR) immediately jump to mind.
I think if it’s a good story, well told, then I’ll enjoy it. SPACE: 1999 only bothered with time travel twice (3 times if you include “The Full Circle”, 4 if you include the future Alphan children from “OMEGA”/”ALPHA”). I have to say though, I don’t find the idea of time travel in ’99 that attractive a proposition. I think Powys tell far more absorbing stories when they turn away from such obvious and overused story devices.
If an enemy from the future, returns with the children to destroy their ancestors, fine. But the interesting twist Bill is proposing to introduce…
that of starting the story in Year 2 and picking it up in Year 3 and concluding it there
… is a fascinating one.
Can’t wait for this book!
Oh & I too would like some Brell Christmas Tree ornaments please! Thanks! B)
to me, this is all good news.
because, quite frankly, from the scrap of outline that I’ve read of the Children of the Gods story, I thought it was bunk and I don’t think I would have liked the episode. It has a mildly interesting twist to it, but it’s a story I don’t particularly care for. At all.
Partly, as was pointed out, because I’ve seen the ‘all powerful being’ story done one too many times already, but really, it’s because the style of the story is one that I find particularly boring (the ‘powered’ toying with the ‘weaker’). “It’s a Good Life”, “Charlie X” and their ilk are just not my thing. Yawn.
To have this thing re-architected sounds like a very good thing indeed.
For the most part, I agree. Certainly, a re-architected version of the original storyline, done with Johnny’s blessing and input, and written by one of the best novel writers (the other being John Kenneth-Muir) will make it an exciting read.
Does anyone remember Bill mentioning Kano’s autopsy and the fact that CotG would be set not only in Year Two, as originally intended, but also in Year 3 from a conversation with him a while ago in the Powys Chat room? I mention these two particular spoilers only to reinforce the fact that Biil is on course to writing another masterpiece set on our beloved Alpha & to hopefully fuel further excitement regarding this highly anticipated release. As far as I’m concerned, he’s the Peter David of SPACE: 1999. That being the case, just imagine: Peter David and Johnny Byrne sit down to write a SPACE: 1999 Novel together. How exciting is that possibibility?!? With the release of ”Children of the Gods” I believe that possbility is about to be realised.

As anxious as I am for new material, there is apparently a market/audience/readership out there who are looking forward to the re-release of The Forsaken, if one can judge by a few comments on the social networking sites. New cover art work can make this happen soon, right?
A re-release of ”The Forsaken” is something I would buy. I’m missing the alternative rosepetal cover, so I’d planned to buy this version upon re-release. It’s a stunning novel. There’re so many moments of brilliance… The fight between Paul & Tony remains a highlight for me. As does the moment when Paul takes Helena hostage, walking her at lasergun point through a travel tube tunnel. Superb stuff. Utterly superb. A really, REALLY superb novel written by someone who, like me, appreciates the strengths and failings and triumphs of both seasons of the original TV series.
Saying that, ”Survival” is a novel very close to my heart. Of all of them, this was the novel that really excited me. Because it was the end of Year One, and the beggining of my beloved Year Two. It was the stepping stone between the two. I still remember my joy at the moment when Koenig and the others sweep through the doors of Command Centre for the first time having been forced to destroy Main Mission (emotionally, as a fan of Year One & Year Two, the destruction of Main Mission was as upsetting as the destruction of the original USS Enterprise in ”Star Trek III – The Search For Spock”). When Koenig picks up his Year Two jacket and Command Centre powers up… well, it was a seminal moment in Alpha’s history. And Powys revealed it to us in this novel. In style. I was beyond overjoyed at the events in this novel. & the loss of Victor… and the aftermath… so very touching. I love Year One, but Year Two bought me to SPACE: 1999 as a child of the 1970’s & 1980’s who was living in London in the UK & watching Year Two episodes on Saturday mornings on LWT (London Weekend Television).
The re-release of ”Survival” would pose far greater problems than the re-release of ”The Forsaken” because of the sheer number of typo’s (from memory, ”The Forsaken” is pretty much typo free as are several other Powys novels. The exceptions (as far as I can tell) are ”Android Planet” and the ’Year Two Omnibus). I’ve been reading little bits of ”Android Planet” every now and then, and getting a little further forward with the story each time I do. When I do, I forward corrections directly to Mateo, who updates them via Lulu. One day, the book will be typo-free. The ”Year Two Omnibus” has very few typo’s and they’re so minor, they haven’t bothered me or spoilt my enjoyment of the book at all.
If ”Survival” does get a re-release, I’m going to offer to send my copy, which has all the typo’s I originally found highlighted in Yellow Highlighter pen directly to Mateo by Air Mail because I’d love the second printing via Lulu to be an even bigger success than the original.
As for Artwork, I, like Pat & many others, would like to see any re-releases feature new artwork by Ken Scott. His work is quite simply, breathtaking & the addition of one of his covers can only add to the “Must Have!!” nature of any re-release.
Breakaway Part 2 was indeed the name of the story Steve. I can also recommend “What Lies Beneath” which was a revelation.
Have printed a Hard Copy of ”What Lies Beneath” Zack. So far, it’s proving very, very interesting and well written. Thanks for making me aware of its existence.
Steve FosterParticipantVery exciting news indeed! & Bill’s post highlights, once again, the respectful, well thought out beind-the-scenes creative process that goes into the writing of these books. I’d rather this and the long waits than a production line of half baked novels that add nothing new to the Alphan’s Odyssey.
I’m with Tex. Johnny’s vision of SPACE: 1999 is in safe hands when left to Mateo & BL. I look forward to what will prove to be another startling novel by Bill with great anticipation.
”Children of the Gods”, ”The Whispering Sea”, ”Phoenix of Megaron”, ”The Final Revolution”, ”The Year One Omnibus”, ”Prodigal Moon”, ”Odysseus Wept”… all these still to come and more from Powys.
The future remains… UTTERLY fantastic!
Steve FosterParticipantZack wrote:
I have also managed to find a sequel to Breakaway…
Would that by any chance be ”Breakaway – Part 2″ written by Matt Butts Zack?
That script/piece of Fan Fiction is a masterpiece. I consider it canon.
There is another sequel to Breakaway entitled ”The Void Ahead” by William R Swanson. Also very good indeed. Both can be found here:
(Who’s still editing Pat’s book, about to (hopefully) start editing another S99 book, is writing two S99 books himself (really, two?), … and is eagerly awaiting the final drafts of Phoenix of Megaron and The Whispering Sea to start formatting — and who wonders if we’re dead, how come I’m so friggin’ busy?)
All of this is WONDERFUL to read! Thanks for the update Bill.
Y’see folks, I told you Powys Media wasn’t dead… :cheer:
Steve FosterParticipantHappy Belated ”Breakaway Day” to all at Powys & to my fellow SPACE: 1999 fans on the forum.
In the end, I had quite a busy day, but I managed to read a little bit more of ”Android Planet” and the ”Year 2 Omnibus” before I went to bed B)
(In case you’re wondering which “bit”, I read ”The Bringer’s of Wonder – Part 1″. Have to admit, I didn’t like some of the changes made to it, even though I could see why some of them were made. Sometimes, in trying to make Year 2 more inteligent, it loses some of it’s charm. I have to say though, the extra material from the shooting scripts that MB has introduced in several stories is fascinating to read!)…
The scene where Helena & Diana Morris bitch at each other is extended in the Y2O. Helena’s acidic comment about Diana’s nosejob is priceless! I nearly rolled out of bed laughing at it!
Steve FosterParticipantFantastic post Pat… it’s got me thinking… I’d certainly buy a fully fledged prequel to ”Breakaway”.
I’d like to see a sequel to ”New Adam, New Eve” (“one chink of light as New Earth broke up around him and Magus’d still get away from it”). I’d like to see Magus’s revenge…
(I have written a brief synopsis for such a tale if powys is interested…)
I’d also like to see a sequel to ”The Lambda Factor”. What happened to Carolyn Powell? (again, I have written a brief synopsis for such a story if anyone’s interested).
I’d also like to see either a short story or a fully fledged novel set after ”Survival” which culminates in the “death” of David Kano prior to ”The Metamorph”.
Steve FosterParticipantMr Latham mentioned something about ”The Final Revolution” in an e-mail to me a couple of months back (I’m good at keeping secrets!).
I’m delighted that something official has been said about it by the Powys Admin in the Chat Room. What little Bill told me about it, sounded VERY exciting. This is going to be another MASTERPIECE by the man who broughth us ”Resurrection”, ”OMEGA” & ”ALPHA”.
Time for one of Zack’s Happy Dances I think… B)
Steve FosterParticipantFor this years Breakaway Day, I will be watching a favourite episode from Year 1, then one from Year 2 & I then plan to follow this by reading another chapter of “Android Planet” & another story from the Year 2 Omnibus.
Long live SPACE: 1999! B)
Steve FosterParticipantmateo wrote:
Don’t worry, I am working on Phoenix of Megaron–the next book due out, then Pat Sokol’s book, then John Muir’s new 1999 novel.
Thank the MUF(s) for that! LOL!
I shall be buying all three… but of the three, I have to admit to being desperately excited about the forthcoming release of “The Whispering Sea” purely because I’m such a MASSIVE Year 2 fan & because I adore Maya & Tony 🙂 and also because…
I’ll finally get to see the events that cause Maya & Tony to fall for one another & Maya settling in on Alpha after “The Metamorph”! A KEY novel this & not to be missed imho!
