Thank you again, to everyone at Powys and to Mateo for your hard work and for making the re-release possible
Steve FosterParticipantVERY excited about all the new releases Mateo… and delighted that all the original novels will be re-released along with new, Powysverse in-continuity versions of Android Planet & Phoenix of Megaron. I’ll be buying all of these… finances permitted as and when they’re released.
Thank you for all your hard work  don’t stop! LOL! 😛 😉
Chapter One is now, hopefully, typo free!
I have to say… this was an absolutely brilliant novel!
I approached it at the time I originally bought it (yep, I’ve got first editions of all the Powys Novels – I’ve been buying your books since day 1!) with so much excitement… to me, this was the end of Year 1 and the start of Year 2. I wasn’t dissapointed by it, that’s for sure! The novel absolutely delievered on everything I had hoped it would!
NOTE: Can I just say, I love SPACE: 1999 in its entirety! I see both Year 1 and Year 2 as a single piece, but I came to ’99 when Year 2 was being repeated on Saturday mornings in the early 80’s here in the UK. I was immediately hooked by it’s warmth, humour, Tony & Maya’s friendship, John & Helena’s love relationship, the Eagles, the Swifts, the fast pace of the stories I watched etc. etc. all this in spite of the rubber frog monsters & Brain the flippin’ iritating Brain! SPACE has been my absolute no. 1 favourite series ever since. I love it with all my heart B) anyway, I digress, back to Survival…
The novel is full of incredible moments… it’s just brilliant tbh. For me, the moment that thrilled me the most, was when Koenig and co. enter and activate Command Centre. I could just see the doors open and Koening stride in (as Helena does in the Year 2 Opening Ttitles) and then pick up his new jacket. I was almost jumping up and down on the spot. Year 2 had BEGUN! It was wonderful and Koenig’s personal farewell to Victor on the lunar surface… truly moving.
Anyway, needless to say, the only flaw with the novel is the sheer number of typo’s. It was horrendous! A typo-free re-release with a new Ken Scott cover would make me buy it again.
Any chance Ken’ll get a shot at that Mateo?
Yeah, we’re re-releasing The Forsaken via Lulu.com too. This is easily the most requested reprint! I don’t know if we’ll do it as two covers though.
Surely it’ll have a new Ken Scott cover? I’m sure Ken would come up with something TOTALLY awesome, as he did for all of Powys’s original novels this year…
Steve FosterParticipantI’ve voted… just once… but it was a toughie!
The return of Powys Media itself nearly took my vote… but I just had to vote for the new books. I mean… ALPHA, OMEGA, Born for Adversity and Shepherd Moon. All wonderful. I waited years to read them… and they were well worth the wait.
As for ALPHA & OMEGA… can I just re-state for the record, once again, how TOTALLY amazing these two books were! Masterpieces, both of them! Imho the DEFINITIVE explanation of the actions/motivations & effect of the MUF upon the SPACE: 1999 universe(s). Bloody marvellous! B)
All I can say is… Year 3 – BRING IT ON POWYS MEDIA! B) 😉
Steve FosterParticipantJust purchased my copy (Pay Day today!). Thanks to Spacefan for the coupon code
Anything written by Mr Latham is a MUST HAVE purchase imho 😉
I wonder who’ll get it first… Zack hopefully! LOL! :cheer:
I just got word from Martin Willey that there are Year 2 episode soundtracks as well!
Must admit, being a HUGE fan of all that’s good about Year 2 (I’m only too aware of it’s flaws – but that doesn’t stop me loving it!) I’m dying to hear the outakes and omited scenes from the second season. But it has to be said… these lost audio finds are astonishing! What a brilliant year it’s been for ’99 fans everywhere what with several brilliant, original novels being released by Powys (ALPHA & OMEGA are masterpieces! They’re everything I hoped they’d be… and so much more!), the recent Blu Ray releases both here in the UK and the US and now these lost audio’s… I’m a very happy fan indeed at the moment!
Now if only Powys could get “Android Planet” out in time for me to get it before Christmas… 😉
Steve FosterParticipantVery excited about the re-release of this particular novel.
Have held off from buying the original & likewise, I’ve not bought PoM either however, I have read “Alien Seed” and “Rogue Planet” both of which I thought were excellent even if some of the characterisations were badly off in places… be interesting to see what Powys does with these two when/if E C Tubb’s estate gives you their blessing to re-release them.
I for one will be buying the Powys Media version of Android Planet as soon as it’s available (I’m presuming it’ll be sold via Lulu?)
B)
…Know mention of the two E.C. Tubb Books Alien Seed & Rogue Planet. Will these two books be reprinted
I was just thinking the same thing! I’ve just sourced copies of these novels (incl. a MINT condition copy of Eagle One Media’s reprint of “Alien Seed”). Have to admit, have read 2 chapters of Alien Seed and am absolutely hooked. Brilliant novel! Would love these 2 works to receive a Powys re-print with additional material tying the 2 novels in to the Powys SPACE: 1999 Chronology B)
VERY excited about several of the other releases. Can’t wait for “The Whispering Sea”. At last, we’ll get a novel set entirely within Year 2 and written by someone who really understands all that’s good about it – John Kenneth Muir! Bring it on that’s what I say! LOL! ;-D
Steve FosterParticipantVery interesting to read Pat’s post about ”Remembering Julia” and SJ’s response to it. I’m planning to re-read this story at some point over the course of the next few days 😉

I re-read ”Futility” last night. I have to say… I enjoyed reading it more the second time around! When Franklin hits the repeat button and the phrase “We’re all dying here…” is repeated again and again, I could hear the Year 1 drum roll into the opening titles in my head as he shouted “Doctor Russell! You better get out here!” The final paragraph of the piece stood out too. When I read it, I imagined Landau doing an “Arkadia”-type voice-over and closing the episode with the words “It was a thing called hope.”. Characterisation was spot-on too. I could literally “hear” the actors speaking the lines as I read them. I would say ”Futility” is less a short story and more a missing episode of Year 1 that never made it to the screen. I’ve always enjoyed JK-M’s work (The second half of “The Forsaken” is absolutely gripping!). This is a truly excellent piece of writing. Any flaws in the writing (see previous posts) were very minor imho and certainly didn’t detract from this complex and involving tale which I thought was very true to the spirit of the Year 1 format.
** I HAVE RE-WRITTEN THE REST OF THIS POST ON 27/5/2010 AFTER RE-READING ”The Touch of Venus”. THIS IS BECAUSE SOME OF MY EARLIER COMMENTS WERE COMPLETELY INACURATE! APOLOGIES TO JK-M FOR THIS & THANKS ALSO TO ZACK FOR HIS THOUGHT-PROVOKING REPLY RE: THE USE OF CURRENT TECHNOLOGY IN THE CONTEXT OF SPACE: 1999’S 1970’S TECHNOLOGICAL LANDSCAPE.**
I should add that I also enjoyed ”The Touch of Venus” by the samer author, however, my enjoyment of said story was marred somewhat by the presence of some very-Star Trek sounding technobable (“Stereographic and altimetric maps” being the most jarring example of this. Why not just describe it as “a map of the surface”?). Then later, Tessa reviews “Log Entries”. Wouldn’t they be “Status Reports”? Evening Star being “Hailed” by the Morning Star’s advance party was also pure Trek. Nobody ever hails anybody in ’99. The use of the word sticks out like a sore thumb.
Characterisation-wise, Tony Cellini comes out best imo. I love the character and found the actor who played him gave a very passionate and believable performance on screen. Here, the character is faithfully re-created. I had trouble with the characterisation of Koenig though. He seemed to be doing complex tasks like Computer Modelling and so on which I didn’t think was in-character. Unlike ”Futility”, where I could “hear” Landau’s voice loud and clear in the writing, I found this earlier version of John Koenig departed quite considerably from the characterisation established by Landau on-screen.
Still, the abiding image for me is that of Sam & Tessa, shadowy silhouettes standing sentinel-like at a window, silently watching as Koenig makes his escape. It is a chilling image and one that remained in my mind long after I’d finished reading the story.
Anyway, what I’ve written here is a lot more thought out and accurate compared to what I wrote previously… & I haven’t even mentioned the mind-bogglingly brilliant ”Spider’s Web” yet!. When I read that “RYAN” was the name on that Alphan’s spacesuit visor… well, chills ran down my spine! What an amazing image! A thrilling, intriguing tale!
Shepherd Moon was an excellent novel. If there is a sequel (which I certainly hope there will be) I will certainly be buying it.
Steve FosterParticipantI’ve nearly finished reading ”Shepherd Moon”. “Remembering Julia” is the absolute stand out piece for me. Marvellous prose and absolutely gripping. From the very first scene, with the wreck of Eagle 31, I was totally drawn in to it. A tremendous piece. Moving and revealling. Superb! Get that man to write a full length SPACE: 1999 novel!
Steve FosterParticipantAt last, Powys Media has returned… and I’m absolutely delighted!
I’ve corresponded with William Latham (Hi Bill!) about Powys and the novels privatelyfor several years, intersperced with long gaps caused only by being busy with other priorities in the real world!
Often, I would passionately defend all that I love about Year 2, in the hopes that the positive changes that Fred Freiberger wrought (more action, immediacy, pacing, character development, overt romance, laughter, warmth, friendship etc.) would not be lost by the understandable temptation to restore the Year 1 format in literary form.
I treasure those exchanges and would like to publicly thank Bill for taking the time to reply, debate, and provoke discussion about SPACE: 1999.
I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to hold ”Shepherd Moon”, ”Born for Adversity” & ”OMEGA” in my hands. In English money, I’ve paid nearly £50 to own all three. That’s a lot of money LOL! But it’s been worth it. I’ve longed to own and read these books for so long… I had almost given up hope of ever doing so.
I’d like to thank Bill and Mateo, all at Powys and Lulu for resurrecting this startling and provocative range of novels. I look forward to many more. Mateo’s goals as stated in “Our Main Mission” are totally in tune with where I want to see the series go.
Welcome back Powys Media. We’ve missed you and your passion and dedication to this series that we love so much B)
