Steve FosterParticipant
OK.
I manged to read the first 10 pages on the bus home from work before my friend arrived.
THE GOOD POINTS (imho):
The novel is immediately engaging. The prose style is colourful and enjoyable to read. Everything feels fresh and interesting. The characterisations are spot on and the setting (preparation for a Gilbert and Sullivan performance) brings out unexpected nuances of the Year 1 characters which I found delightful. The inclusion of Computer, the focus on Kano and the continuity with “Voyager’s Return” is also pleasing.
THE BAD POINTS:
I’m sorry to say… there’re typo’s. Several in fact… and I’m only 10 pages in π
My friend has gone home and I’m off to bed. I’m desperate to read more as i think this is going to be a wonderful read… but the typo’s are glaring and do “take you out” of the story when they occur imo, which is a shame.
Still, on the whole, 9 out of 10 (knocking a point off purely for the Typo’s).
Oh… and is it me… or is Ken’s artwork darker on the printed cover? The Eagle is more in shadow, losing some of the CGI detailing, which is a shame. It’s still a stand out cover though B)
Just some early feedback. I’m just SO glad it’s here.
Tomorow night, I will return to Moonbase Alpha, hop aboard an Eagle and journey to… The Android Planet :woohoo: I honestly can’t wait! π
…No problem, my universe sits quite nicely in its own niche and the powysverse is a reasonable substitute, even though there are some things that are just plain wrong.
You’ve piqued my interest Zack. What things would you say are “wrong”?
I feel that a couple of things are… well, “not as I would like them to be”, but I put that down to personal preference & creative differences. An obvious example: Maya would still be a Metamorph if I was in charge of the Powys books, however, the decision to make her a pureblooded Psychon, non-Metamorph does allow the writers to explore “Maya the Woman” as an alien, an outsider, a figure shrouded in tragedy and grief but very much a part of the Alphan community. Yes, I miss Maya & Tony having humourous banter, but that to me, is where their relationship was at in Year 2. I’ve had to accept, with some sadness, that Year 2 is over π and that in Year 3 everything that’s comfortable or familiar about SPACE: 1999 is being shaken and challenged for the sake of creating exciting, innovative tales featuring our favourite Alphans and with the intention of getting the series “back on course” after the detour it took in Year 2. I’m fine with that and I’m enjoying the ride immensely so for me, I see the approach Powys has taken as being “different” rather than “wrong”.
Would be interested in hearing the thoughts of everyone’s favourite Happy Dancer on the subject π
Steve FosterParticipantMy copy arrived in the post today. Much joy ensued! It looks great. Won’t get to read it until tomorow night though as I’ve got a friend coming round this evening. Still, I’m DELIGHTED that it’s arrived! B)
Steve FosterParticipantNo miracle for me unfortunately. I tried to order it… and an error message came up on PayPal. Tried on a different day, and the same thing happened again. I’m beggining to wonder what it is I’m doing wrong… π
Steve FosterParticipantJust dropped in to say a
BIG THANKYOU!
To Mateo and all at Powys for getting this released B)
As you were  :silly:
Steve FosterParticipantAh… I see. Well that’s all right then π as you were  π
Finally managed to order the book… After 3 tries. :angry:I tried to use a discount code and the order wouldn’t go through to Pay-Pal. Contacted Lulu and they cancelled the order and gave me a new discount code. Tried again but the same problem occurred. Had to forget the discount code and pay full price. Surprise, surprise the order went through no problems. Over an hour of frustration and anger and all for $20.00 hardly seems worth the effort.
Oh dear… π sorry to hear you had a bad time with it Zack.
Just ordered mine. Yippee! New SPACE: 1999 novel on its way! What a great way to start the weekend!
Zack just think… there’s a new SPACE: 1999 novel on its way to you too! How exciting is that?!? Can I get a witness? Better still, can I get a “Happy Dance”? π (I’d do one, but it’d only be a pale immitation of yours!) π
Steve FosterParticipantDid “Hyria” π get approved?
Anything’s possible – though I have to confess that the one 1999 idea I really fancy doing requires Maya to be a shapeshifter, so there’s a certain irony involved…
Shouldn’t be a problem… just set the novel during Year 2 and before “Born for Adversity” B)
Syukhtun is cycle of short stories about the alternate Alphans before Omega. The existence of Carter and Regina’s daughter came out of that. It doesn’t negate the book.Odysseus Wept is still coming out. A Cry in the Wilderness is a novella. To be honest, we’ve just been too busy to do much work on these yet.
Thanks for that Mr L. Any news is better than no news at all π

Haha! Zack has made me LOL once again! :cheer:
Steve FosterParticipantThat’s a shame (re: you not being a Short Story writer) and as for not writing any more original Who novels, again, your reasoning makes sense. I’ve enjoyed reading several of the newer, hard cover novels based on the new series (I thought “Prisoner of the Daleks” by Trevor Baxendale was quite superb!) but yes, they do tend to lack… a certain something.
Still, what a high note to go out on! (“The Eleventh Tiger”). Quite superb!
Still, one can only hope you’ll write something Who-related again one day π and if we’re lucky, another novel set in the SPACE: 1999 universe too B)
Steve FosterParticipantStill no news regarding these
Android Planet, Phoenix of Megaron and the re-release of Resuurection are the priority at the mo… but I’m desperately curious about these books…
Isn’t anybody else? Or am I alone on this thread?
π π
Steve FosterParticipantAnother question:
PLEASE tell me Steven Jansen is going to be writing another story for inclusion in this book? PRETTY PLEASE! π
