Steve FosterParticipantI’d like to take you up on that offer Mateo.
But what about Mary’s Monster? You didn’t include that on the list of books that you have with you. I’m wanting to order the Year 2 Omnibus and that book, neither of which I’ve had any success in purchasing so far…
lots and lots of interesting things
I love the fact that we’re talking about the novels with such enthusiasm and passion, even if we have to agree to disagree quite amicably on occasion. I plan to read both novels again just as soon as I can find the time.
I think the most important thing that’s come out of all this is the understanding that we’re enjoying these novels, want to read more and plan to keep buying them. Music to Mateo’s ears no doubt!
π πSteve FosterParticipantDarn it! Now I’ve made a fool of myself by posting a pic… only to find that no one else knows how. What would my American friends say were they in my shoes?
“Bummer dude!” perhaps π
Did anyone have trouble ordering ANDROID PLANET? My order got redirected and could not go to the payment page.
That is VERY odd. I had no problems at all. I couldn’t order “Mary’s Monster” or the “Year 2 Omnibus” no matter how many times I clicked on the PayPal link. For some reason, me being in the UK, creates an error message that stops me from giving Powys more money! π
I wish someone would sort it out… my next window to buy these extra books is the end of Feb. I’ve put money aside for the re-release of the incredible “Ressurrection”, but anything else will have to wait until the end of Feb :unsure:
Steve FosterParticipantI’m ready to purchase it as soon as you’re ready to make it available Mateo me old mucker! Haha! π π π
Steve FosterParticipantUltra… I enjoy your reviews, so please keep posting them! π
Here are my thoughts on what you’ve posted on this thread:
The eclipse in Chapter 12 of Alpha. Before I could even finish the thought that an eclipse was impossible, it was labeled a βlunar eclipseβ. At which point I nearly threw the book against the wall and gave up reading the story. I know I shouldnβt let these little things bother me so much, but Koenig would know the difference between a solar and lunar eclipse.
I find it astonishing that something so utterly trivial provoked such an OTT reaction! Yes, he would, but this is FICTION! Koenig would know if he were real. He isn’t. The writer goofed. And you’re (quite probably) the only one that noticed.

OverallA rollicking convoluted story for the hard-core fan that brings in everything except the kitchen sink to explain and resolve the meta-story of 1999…
Rating: 6/10.
I agree (with the summing up) but I disagree with the score you’ve given (with all of my heart and with MUCH passion! So much passion, I have to post in CAPITAL LETTERS!) Haha! π
Let me give away a little secret here…
(forgive me Bill).
I read the Prologue of OMEGA several years before it was published (because William Latham and I were corresponding 1 to 1 by e-mail – for the most part, I was fighting for the integrity of all that was good about Year: 2 and begging him and Powys to preserve those things!). Let me make this VERY CLEAR: I have NO INFLUENCE over Powys or what they do with my favourite TV series ever WHATSOEVER. But when I read…
Luke Ferro’s dying words/thought: “The Testament of Arkadia… is that all life… is ultimately… extinguished!”
I was COMPLETELY blown away! I thought about it for days afterwards. I’d be making a cup of tea, having come home from work, and suddenly stop and think about what Luke had said/thought… and it just blew my mind! This… was something beyond this passionate fan’s comprehension. & I liked it!
Thank God for the genius of William Latham!
I think that one remark symbolises why the death of Sara Picton is handled/portrayed in the way that it is.
And I was actually very happy with Victor’s characterisation. He, like all the characters, is growing and changing. Remember, he lost his wife to the Dragon’s. Confronted with them and the Brell and everything else… wouldn’t YOU give up and just want to crawl under your bed and hide? And, if Victor hadn’t given up, Bill wouldn’t have been able to give Sandra one of her best lines in the series EVER!
“If the pity party is over…”
God, I love these novels. All of them. For me, they are absolutely canon.
…but unfortunately requires a brain check at the door.Rating: 6/10.
On this point, I must PASSIONATELY DISAGREE!!!!
I give ALPHA & OMEGA… 512 out of 10
To be honest, if you look at Star Trek, SPACE: 1999 and many, MANY other TV series, you’d have to leave your brain at the door with regards to most, if not all of them π Perhaps, if you did, you might enjoy the stories more. At the end of the day, science fiction is enjoyable, sometimes provocative nonsense imho.
I’m happy to leave my brain at the door… if doing so enables me to: “Escape to world’s beyond belief”. The world of SPACE: 1999 as portrayed in shocking, moving, unpredictable novels such as OMEGA & ALPHA, leaves me hungry and desperate to do so far more! They are enjoyable, thrilling novels, both of them! B)
The defence rests. No further questions at this time your honour π :silly:
Steve,
You have read the book and have sent Mateo the book back with the typos highlighted. My question is is the book still readable or would you suggest that we all buy a new copy of the book when the corrections have been made? Thanks MIKE
Hi Mike. Sorry I’ve not replied sooner. Much as I love Powys and adore their books, I’ve been somewhat distracted by:
1. Stuff involving mates (friends, in case that phrase doesn’t translate into American!) π
2. Being diagnosed with a mental health problem. Nope, I’m not bonkers. I apparently suffer with something called “Atypical Depression” (look it up on Wiki folks!).Anyway, all of this aside, can I just say, Typos’s are a REALLY minor point. I notice them, so I mention to Mateo via the Forum, that I’ve noticed them.
But as for the book itself… Mike, what are you waiting for?!? BUY IT NOW! It’s brilliant… I’ve only read Chapters’ 1 and 2. I’ve not had time or energy to read beyond that, due to the previously mentioned distractions π
If you haven’t bought it, please do. Without people buying the books, Powys can’t release more. So please, PLEASE! PLEASE! buy these wonderful, imaginative, really well written, provocative, controversial books & then Powys will release LOTS more of them! π
PS: I don’t work for Powys Media. I live in the UK (home of Bowler Hats, John Steed, Tea, The Queen and the Royal Family, Tea, Skinheads (like me, who’re neither racist or agressive and are actually jolly nice people to know!), Tea, and, perhaps MOST importantly of all, the birthplace of SPACE: 1999, Blake’s 7, Crossroads, The Avengers, Doctor Who and many other wonderful TV Series!) π

LOL! :laugh: π
Steve FosterParticipantRead Chapter 1 last night. Ye Gods! This book is a fantastic read! :cheer: the cliffhanger at the end of Chapter 1…
where the column of Moondust has been whipped up and is heading for the base
…stuck in my mind long after I’d read it. I could just see it in my mind! What a ride this novel is!
REGARDING TYPO’S:
Mr L, how do I send the Typo’s to you? (tried to PM you on here… but I can’t find a way to do that). Should I just list them on this thread? I’ve classed them as 1. Typos’s (wrong word used, misspelling), 2. Missing Words, 3. Oddities (phrases/sentences that make no sense that could either be just JR’s way of describing something or an Americanism that doesn’t translate into Queen’s Engllish! Haha!) 4. Missing Punctuation 5. Names of Alpha Sections that should be in Capitals but aren’t π
1. = 4
2. = 4
3. = 5
4. = 2
5. = 1Like I say, the important thing to say is:
THIS IS A FANTASTIC SPACE: 1999 NOVEL! :cheer:
But there’re minor errors/typo’s in the text :blush: :blink:
Steve FosterParticipantRe: the previous two posts…
Now THIS is what we need. Discussion, debate and the sharing of our various POV. Real debate on the series’ themes, characters and story arcs. Not pointless discussions such as “If they bought back SPACE: 1999 which Hollywood Actors would you cast to play John & Helena?” yada yada. How boring and pointless are those sorts of discussions! I’ve no interest in them at all! :angry:
How fantastic that there’re new novels being released regularly, written by very talented writers, that are exciting, thought provoking and sometimes, uncomfortable. Uncomfortable because there’s jeopardy. Nothing is cosy anymore. Nothing can be taken for granted. There are twists, turns and surprises applenty and, just as importantly, old questions are finally being answered whilst new and intriguing ones are being set up.
How fantastic, also, that we can come here, to the Powys Media Forum, interact directly with the writers and discuss/debate these things without fear of condemnation. Yes, we can (respectfully) agree to disagree, but we know we can talk about all this stuff honestly and passionately (as Zack & Mateo have above) π
I think that’s pretty fantastic, which is what SPACE: 1999 (despite its many faults) is. A really fantastic, much loved TV series B)
I’ve enjoyed everything that has so far been revealed in the novels… and I’m HUGELY excited by what’s yet to come.
Viva Powys Media! :silly: :woohoo:
Well, Steve, since you have highlighted your copy to help us with typos, I’ll send you a corrected copy later, on me.Thanks!
Why Mr L, you’re a gentleman π btw, I did the same with “Survival”, but don’t tell anyone! π π
Right, I’m going to make myself a cup of tea (having had a nice long soak in the bath) and then settle down with AP and my highlighter pen.
I can hear the voice of Barbara Bain, from the “Breakaway US TV Premier” intro now, as she says…
“Come with us… to Moonbase Alpha…” B) π
Steve FosterParticipantmateo wrote:
Send me the typos and we’ll fix them! Please note the page number. Believe me, we checked and checked, nevertheless they always get through.
I’ve started highlighting them as I spot them. I’m going to start reading AP from the beggining tonight. I won’t be rushing then. I’ll mark them off with a highlighter pen as I go along.
One that sticks in my mind is when Kano lifts his Comm-lock for a one to one with Koenig.
In the book it says something like “from a one to one with Koenig”. For has been replaced with From (a common Spellcheck error). I groaned when I read it and thought: “Uh oh. Mateo will hate me when I tell him there are typo’s”. And after all the hours you put in trying to get rid of them… π
Still, let’s get this into perspective. Typo’s are a minor iritation whereas the arrival of a new, SPACE: 1999 novel from Powys (well, new from my POV as I haven’t read the original) is a cause for celebration imho! B) :woohoo:
