Yes, this is pure gold. I found out about this lost audio from the Space:2099 mailing list. Here’s the background info Richard Bendell emailed the group 10-26-2010:

    Hi all,

As Simmonds once said so well “the impossible takes just a little longer, that’s all!” This has rarely been more true than today.

Unbelievable as it may seem, apparently a college student was given various audio tape reels to practise with, erase and return many years back. Turns out these were actual rare audio takes from the episode Breakaway and contained scenes that were filmed but never used and the student realized what it was he had and wisely didn’t erase them and got permission to keep them which he did for the past 35 years or so.

Now, with the help of a friend he is now making them available to all 1999 fans, something for which we all can be very, very grateful for.

The first example was posted at Eagle Transporter and comprises of several takes of a cut scene where Gorski and Koenig are talking about Dr. Russell. Gorski in particular reveals the simmering animosity that exists between them when he says “I don’t like you either Koenig” and he gives a rather harsh assessment that Helena is incapable of assessing the situation they’re facing due to personal issues from her past… fascinating stuff!

Further takes are available at the link that was kindly posted on the ITC DVD yahoo group:

The audio is by no means perfect but this is an amazing treasure trove of footage that was believed to have been shot but feared lost for all-time. Perhaps the video is out there too somewhere just waiting to be rediscovered as well, here’s hoping!

It’s interesting to hear that in the original Breakaway episode there was dialogue between commanders Gorski and Koenig about the possible emotional impact of HR losing her husband.

This underscores Stephen Jansen’s insightful interpretation of HR’s response to this loss in Remembering Julia.

You can hear several takes of the original audio from the missing Breakaway scene here:

I’m so sorry to hear of Mr. Tubb’s passing.

When I read his story in Shepherd Moon I felt all the same pleasure he had brought me as a kid reading his Space:1999 novelizations.

It’s sad to think that we won’t have more of his stories to look forward to.

To celebrate Breakaway day I read another story in shepherd Moon, Remembering Julia, which was absolutely excellent.

I downloaded an interview with Bob Wood talking about his own book, Destination Moonbase Alpha, on the Destinies Radio Show.

If Space:1999 were to ever come back as a revamped series I would say the Powysverse would be the perfect writer’s guide.

And I’m usually pretty good about catching those kinds of things.

Looking forward to the release. Any information yet on its length?

    I realize it’s a short story.

There does seem to be a dark caricature of some sort in the area of the mouth.

I would love to be at the convention and am happy Powys took part in it.

If the convention goers know about the next two novels and three (!) audio books, I hope those of us on the forum will be informed soon too. This is very exciting news.

Of course this is very intriguing. My sensors tell me it is an excerpt from A Cry in the Wilderness by Shane Johnson–chronology: after Testament Of Arkadia.

I hope Bill Fraser gets some good development in this novel, whichever it really is.

Since Cellini is referred to, it must be prior to Dragon’s Domain actually…

I just got it today and am very impressed with the quality of the packaging and insert.

It’s moving to hear Barry’s voice doing “reader’s theater”, as it were. His story telling style is very engaging and unrushed.

I can hardly wait to hear more. He’s really bringing Resurrection to life for me.

Actually I was the one that emailed about Fraser’s sleeve color way back when.

I had read in the Catacombs that he was the only Moonbase pilot with a red sleeve, signifying Main Mission/Command Center, rather than the orange pilot’s sleeve. It probably wasn’t a wardrobe mistake, but it was an incongruity that I was intrigued by.

Martin Willey writes in the character guide section of his site, “It is hard to explain why an Eagle pilot wears the red colour code.” Martin says Fraser was presumably Carter’s deputy since in some episodes he steps up to his Command Center post.

I had thought there could be an interesting anecdote or piece of character development behind the reason for his red sleeve. But, as you say Mateo, these things aren’t “seen” in novels anyway. I get it now that in writing a book this would probably be too far out of the scope of the story to be brought up naturally.

I like the idea that Fraser had already begun his interdisciplinary training to become a Command Center operative.

I’m not sure which is correct:

    Lunar Science Research Organization
    Lunar Space Research Organization

I don’t think it was ever brought out in the series, but I may have seen it in Starlog’s Space:1999 technical manual. It would probably be somewhere on the Catacombs website.

I will probably do the English translation of “Que Viva!” with “Long live Barry Morse!” (in our hearts) for his generosity and interest in the fans of Space:1999.

According to my count of convention appearances (checking the Catacombs website), Barry attended more Space:1999 conventions and probably had more involvement with its fans than any other cast member.
