READ Resurrection again? Got your order, soon you can LISTEN to Resurrection. 😛
Mateo LatosaKeymasterThis post is 100% spoilers!
If you think about it, Maya’s metamorphic abilities was overused in Year Two. It seemed like situations and entire episodes were dreamed up just to have an excuse for another transformation. I LIKE the character of Maya and I loved Catherine Schell’s performance in the role. But the ‘Maya saves the day’ aspect was one of the sins of Year Two. It was a gimmick, and we are looking forward to telling stories with Maya, where her greatest attributes are her intelligence, wit, and loyalty. Born for Adversity set the stage for those stories.
Mateo LatosaKeymasterOkay, this HAS to be the first internet forum to use Morse Code as the language of choice for a discussion. I haven’t figured out how to translate from Morse Code back to English–any help?

Mateo LatosaKeymasterIt’s somewhere around six hours long. Originally it was to be released on audio CDs–six of them. But the packaging alone made it prohibitively expensive.
Mateo
Mateo LatosaKeymasterThe audiobook will cost $30 (plus shipping).
Mateo LatosaKeymasterOur licenses don’t allow us to do that.
Mateo LatosaKeymasterThough it is not yet up for pre-order just yet, I have set a FIRM release date of MAY 7th, 2010. As people pre-order, I wil begin packaging their orders. On May 7th, I will ship ALL the pre-orders. After that, I will ship orders every Friday (our usual routine).
Mateo LatosaKeymasterThis is a similar issue to “That character would never do that.” Well, that’s only true until they do it. Even in the series, the characters do things in certain episodes that–at least the first time we saw the episode–we thought they’d never do. THEN, once they’ve done it, we accept that “Of course they’d do that–because they did that!”
If you follow my drift.
This is not to say that it is impossible to write something out of character. Helena isn’t going to have a romantic fling with Tony. Maya isn’t going to live amongst the pigeons. Etc.
But sometimes “That character would never do that” really means “That character would never do or say anything they haven’t done or said before.” And therein lies the danger of being so faithful to the episodes that one is merely re-jiggering dialogue from earlier episodes or not allowing the characters to breathe and grow and suffer and well–the theme of Born for Adversity–CHANGE.
Annoyedchris, I salute you for posting one of the most important revelations about reading (and writing) these books. I am sure all of us at Powys, when we read your latest post, thought “EXACTLY!”
Thanks for posting that.
Mateo LatosaKeymasterI’ve picked up the Resurrection audio book. And played a copy. It looks AWESOME and plays perfectly. The artwork is crisp and clear, the lettering perfect, the recording clear. As soon as we can put up the links for people to pre-order, we will.
The discs won’t ship until May, but we’ll be taking orders throughout April.
The audiobook comes with a four-panel, full-color insert and tray card. The artwork is printed on the disc (no paper label) and comes in a celophane wrapped CD jewel case.
REMEMBER–This is an MP3 DISC! It will play on computers (we recommend Windows Media Player), MP3 players, newer model CD and DVD players. It may NOT play on older model CD and DVD players.
Seriously, it looks AWESOME!!
Thanks to everyone who helped make this project a reality: Barry Morse, William Latham, Anthony Wynn, Robert Wood, Colin Higna. Cesar Gallegos, Joe Tantillo, Phil Merkel, Robert Gendler, David Stoner and everyone at Silva Screen.
Mateo LatosaKeymasterPicking them up tomorrow morning!!
Mateo LatosaKeymasterWell, here’s an update:
We compressed the files–only the music and intro and outro sections NOT the Barry Morse sections–and got the audiobook within the limits. I sent the new master to the printer. They have said the audiobooks will be ready for pickup on Thursday. However, I will most likely pick them up personally on Friday (they are located about an hour away by car).
I will try one out over the weekend. If all is good, we will put up links on the audiobook page for people to PRE-ORDER sometime next week.
We will take pre-orders in the weeks before the actual release at the beginning of May. We printed a limited run of 100. If these sell well and there are additional orders placed, we will make available additional pressings. Everyone’s discs will ship the same day.
Please remember, the Resurrection audiobook is approximately SIX hours long and on a single disc in MP3 format. It will play in computers (we recommend Windows Media Player), newer DVD players, newer car CD players (with MP3 capability). It may not play in older CD players or older DVD players.
We will announce when ordering becomes available. As soon as we can, we’ll put the ordering links up. We’ll announce the ordering links THE MOMENT THEY ARE UP.

Mateo LatosaKeymasterI’ve been putting them up about once every two weeks. One just sold a few hours ago. Copies are also available directly via email for anyone who wants one.

Mateo LatosaKeymasterWe’ve been thinking about that for a while. We’d love to do a novel giving Sandra the spotlight, but the danger is that we end up with a novel that does nothing more than give Sandra the spotlight!
By this I mean, the characters’ roles should be organic to the novel, not forced. The novel’s plot should not be “engineered” to spotlight a particular character.
Resurrection was long discussed as a story that would let Bergman take a leading role and save the base, but ultimately the STORY demanded that Helena Russell be the strongest character. And it is indeed SHE who saves the base. Even the author did not know that going in. Her role grew out of the needs of the story; we didn’t shoehorn her into the leading role.
So we just have to come up with the right story.
Mateo LatosaKeymasterI find all of the cast changes from Year One to Year Two unnecessary. And there were so many! In terms of Yasko, why didn’t they just give Zienia Merton a regular cast position and be done with it. Her acting skills made a small part VERY memorable and most people would believe her character had a bigger role in more episodes than she actually did–such was the impact and memorable nature of her performances.
Space: 1999 like Star Trek before was a ensemble show. True, its triumvirate of Koenig/Russell/Bergman was most prominent. But I felt Paul, Kano, Alan, and Sandra were also well used. Strangely enough, the episode where they got to shine was Full Circle.
I never really felt that any of the Year Two characters aside from Tony and Maya were really given a chance to shine. And they were so underutilized! Ben Vincent, Raul, Alibe, Yasko, they seemed to come and go.
