You didn’t mention the entirely rewritten explanation as to why the Alphans are advised NOT to show violent emotions, and the revision of the idea that the androids CANNOT kill because they don’t understand violent emotions. It always bothered me–no violent emotions are needed to kill.
Human minus head = death.
Human minus air = death
Human minus water = deathThe new version of the novelized episode makes this issue much more logical and was one of the first major revisions made.
Mateo LatosaKeymasterAnd welcome to all the newbies!
Mateo LatosaKeymasterSorry, Cricket, had to go back and check the original post. We’re going to stick with one nomination per person (though you can second another person’s nomination). So far two nominations…
Mateo LatosaKeymasterThat means a lot! It made my day. Thank you.
So it’s official, I guess, there IS a Powysverse–and I couldn’t be prouder.
Rupert Booth has written a story for the Powysverse; I am typing up my edits today. More info on this in the near future. B)
Mateo LatosaKeymasterI don’t read fan fiction as a rule–I CAN’T for obvious reasons. In fact, the only fan fiction I have read was Emma Burrows’s New Moon Over Bajor. It was released to Online Alpha in installments, once every two weeks or so. I couldn’t wait for the next installment! I don’t remember the details of the plot now (other than it being a 1999/DS9 crossover). On the strength of that memory I commissioned a story from Emma for Shepherd Moon.
It’s still early days, but I feel I can reveal that the title of the next anthology will be PRODIGAL MOON.
Mateo LatosaKeymasterWe’ll be giving you all a long-promised update on future releases as soon as we can. We’re working on a lot of things all at one time.
It is now May 28. Our last release was just three weeks ago. Your enthusiasm is appreciated. Just be assured, we’ve got some surprises up our sleeves for you.
Mateo LatosaKeymasterAh, clarity.
Mateo LatosaKeymasterWhat does that mean? Is it a pseudonym?
Mateo LatosaKeymasterA funny thing about the Year Two omnibus. Michael Butterworth and I arranged the episodes to follow Helena’s Status Report dates, though we didn’t include the actual reports or dates. This was done because we wanted to respect the ORDER but not the actual day-counts. Some episodes took place before Dragon’s Domain! Some took place within a week of each other in different star systems, and we all know that there was a VAST gap between TBOW part 1 and TBOW part 2.
The funny thing is this: Maya’s abilities seem to increase as the episodes go along, as if she is slowly mastering her skill with molecular transformation. I may be wrong, but I seem to remember this surprising me at the editing stage.
Mateo LatosaKeymasterYou might want to read Year Two before Shepherd Moon. Though it is not “new” material, it links to the previous Powys books and Year One and forshadows Born for Adversity.
Character-wise, you get a lot of insight into John Koenig in the Year Two omnibus. There is a short piece called Lambda Variance which is an important link, I feel.
But I think David’s list is spot on.

Mateo LatosaKeymasterTo be quite honest, after all this time, I don’t know who wrote that line (maybe me). I asked John at the time what I should write into the omnibus to link back (ahead?) to The Whispering Sea, so I don’t know.
I was born in the sixties. If Helena was born around 1970, she grew up with LPs! And before VCRs!
I can only say that when we talk about The House Between, we often say it was “filmed using digital cameras”. There was no “film” involved. My dad records shows on DVR and says, “we’ve got it on tape”.
I think it may have been simply my anachronistic speech patterns showing up in the book, or Helena’s?
Mateo LatosaKeymasterUse Windows Media Player. Works like a charm. For some reason iTunes just messes it up. The House Between CD was created using iTunes, tagged in iTunes, with the track number at the beginning of each track name, and it STILL messes it up!
Mateo
Mateo LatosaKeymasterI think your interpretation convinced me! And the term “Powysverse” that’s the first time I’ve seen that.
I like it!

Mateo LatosaKeymasterFollowing on this idea, what we tried to do with Remembering Julia was show Helena Russell as being a person who once a psychologist (or at least this is suggested in Dragon’s Domain) and became a medical doctor. We wanted to suggest that following the death of her husband, she’d lost the ability for empathy. It affected her work, so she turned to a different branch of medicine. This is not to say she didn’t already hold creditials in that area, but it became her focus. She gradually opens up over the course of the series and let’s her “inner Barbara Bain” shine through.
Mateo LatosaKeymasterFeel free to let people know on other forums that you’ve all received the Resurrection audiobook–that it’s out! And your thoughts. If you like what we do, help us to let other fans know.
