Speaking of the main characters and their fates, there is something that I am curious to know about.

Some time past, I discovered on wikipedia that if a third season of Space:1999 had been commissioned, Tony Anholt had stated that he would not have returned as Tony Verdeschi. His disappearance would have also remained a mystery, like that of Victor Bergman, Paul Morrow, David Kano, and Tanya Alexander among others. That interesting piece of trivia has been removed from the wikipedia section, for reasons unknown.

All that aside, will Tony Verdeschi continue to be a part of Space:1999? Or will the character be written out of the upcoming Year Three books?

Ah, but we can’t really answer questions like that, can we? Born for Adversity will be our first YEAR THREE book. Will Verdeschi be in it? Well, you’ll just have to be patient a little longer. 😉 Born for Adversity will be out soon, and your question will be answered. After all this time, none of wants to spoil any surprises or give away too much about what happens in the books.

I wouldn’t believe everything that Wikipedia says. A lot of rumours and half-truths soon get turned into ‘facts’.

Anholt didn’t do that many interviews where he discussed the series. There was one which he did years before his death where he was asked if he would have done a Year 3. He replied that he would have had some qualms about it – nothing to do with the cast or quality or how he viewed the series (which, I think it’s fair to say, was with at least some disdain…). He said it was more to do with his aspirations and goals as an actor, and – paraphrasing what he said – he was afraid of getting into a situation where he stayed in a role for the sake of the money and security. He felt that his role in The Protectors did him quite a lot of harm since casting directors saw him as an ‘international’ sort of face/actor which probably limited his ability to land other roles for quite some time. He did say that all other factors being taken into consideration, he “might well have said yes”.

The beauty of course of novels is that the wishes of Tony Anholt (or indeed any other actor) mean absolutely nothing. The Space:1999 universe and it’s people can be developed in all kinds of directions that the series would never have explored. Of course, some fans aren’t necessarily going to like any sort of departure from what they saw on the screen, while others don’t even acknowledge that Year 2 exists! So, it’s a challenging task, I would think.

Great to know that Born for Adversity is going to be available soon. As happy as I am to have ordered Shepherd Moon, I’ve read a fair number of David McIntee’s books, and I’ve been looking forward to this.
