Well, I’ve been away from the site for a little while. But I remember seeing some posts from Mateo that mentioned he was working on a soundtrack, was doing some work on [b]”Phoenix of Megaron”[/b], that he’d received John Kenneth Muir’s first draft of [b]”The Whispering Sea”[/b]…
[spoiler]which is set in Year 2 immediately after the events of [b]”The Metamorph”[/b][/spoiler]
…that it would require a few revisions, but otherwise, was a fine follow up to his brilliant first [b]SPACE: 1999 [/b]novel [b]”The Forsaken”[/b] & that Pat Sokol’s [b]Powysverse Companion [/b]was also in the early editing stages (I think William Latham is working on the proof reading/editing side of things). I also read somewhere that Mateo was tinkering away on the [b]Year 1 Omnibus [/b]too.
So, as far as I can tell, Bill & Mateo are working away on things quietly in the background whenever they are able, but a little more slowly than they would like.
Both of them have some stuff going on in their private lives too, which, more importantly than anything Powysverse related, requires their attention.
The reason I’m posting this is because I’ve popped in to the chat room very briefly once or twice & noticed a few comments that have concerned me.
– one very blunt but refreshingly candid visitor believes the site has been abandoned.
– Another has asked for some word from the powers that be at Powys as to what’s happening with the various books & projects that have been previously announced
– & then there’s Zack, who I think everyone on the Forum is very fond of, who feels all alone in the Powysverse (you’re not Zack, but yeah, it has been pretty quiet).
Personally, I’m a little dissapointed that the massive momentum & general sense of enthusiasm generated by the timely & regular releases of the first couple of books ([b]”Shepherd Moon”[/b], [b]”Born For Adversity”[/b], the masterpieces that are [b]”OMEGA/ALPHA” [/b]& the flawed re-release of [b]”Android Planet”[/b] – flawed only in the sense that like [b]”Survival”[/b], the book has an awful lot of typo’s in it but is otherwise a pretty fantastic read imho) appears to have been lost. This is pretty evident in the fact that very little (on the surface) in the way of news appears to be being posted by anyone at Powys and that the releases announced for 2011 will now not likely see the light of day until 2012 (the fact that the website isn’t being updated is also less than encouraging, but again, this might simply be because this isn’t seen as a priority and there hasn’t been enough time/opportunity for anyone within Powys to do it).
Personally, despite all of the above, I am waiting with a sense of quiet, frustrated anticipation. I KNOW there’re other books coming. I want to buy them & I’m desperate to read them. It’s just going to take a lot longer for them to see the light of day than was originally planned. This is frustrating for me personally, but at the same time, I remember the “Wilderness Years” when Powys simply dissapeared & nothing at all was published or heard from the company for years on end. My only hope during that awful, barren period came through my correspondance with Mr William Latham. It at least, gave me a chance to campaign with some passion for the preservation of as much of what I thought was good about Year 2 as possible in whatever novels Powys would (hopefully) one day publish set in Year 3. Of course, he was also kind enough to send me a few sneak previews and keep me up-to-date as much as was possible with what was actually going on at Powys. To this day, I am grateful to him for that 🙂
It’s been an exciting ride so far. The books have been utterly brilliant. True, I didn’t get much of what I wanted in Year 3, but what I did get, was SO GOOD that I couldn’t do anything else but continue to support any and all their future releases.
Mateo, Bill and everyone else at Powys have so-far, imho, released some fantastic novels that are just as good, if not better, than many of the Star Trek tie in novels. They can be rightly proud of their efforts.
For now, it looks like it’s going to be a waiting game.
At some point… there’ll be news. Further down the road, there’ll be new books too.
Hopefully, other people on here who love what Powys have done thus far & who, like me, are putting their pennies aside to buy any and all future [b]SPACE: 1999[/b] novels published by Powys, will perhaps post an encoouraging message that Bill, Matoe etc. will read on here.
Powys Media is not dead! Thank you for what you have released thus far. I await any & all your future [b]SPACE: 1999[/b] related releases with eager anticipation.

Thanks Steve, I have also been in contact with Mateo from time to time and can tell you that he is very busy. Creating music for a TV series must be a wonderful and yet terrible thing to do. On the one hand you are creating something amazingly beautiful (I know I’ve heard some of it) and you are under pressure from the production schedule to have it done in time to go to air.
I know we will get more books, we just have to be patient. I remember way back at the beginning where we got a couple of books and then nothing for a few years. Hopefully we won’t have to wait that long for the next lot of books to arrive.Keep the faith and remember to celebrate Breakaway Day on Tuesday. I am taking the day off and will be watching Space:1999 Bluray all day. 🙂
I might even don my dancing shoes for a few moments of happy dancing. But I don’t want to be premature. 😛

It’s a SAD time in the Powysverse at the moment…isn’t it 🙁
…but even if we are all a bit quiet at the moment it doesn’t mean we’ve abandoned ship !! Guess REAL LIFE has taken priority and Mateo and BL are otherwise engaged :ohmy: :huh: :unsure:
anyway – hope thats all it is !!!!!!!!! Steve – you summed up my feeling exactly – I can’t wait to get a new Powys book in my hands – haven’t had that sort of THRILL for ages now :laugh:
Breakaway Day should be celebrated in style, for me that means watching ‘Breakaway whilst consuming a very LARGE glass of wine, hopefully someone will be in the POWYSVERSE to have a chat to aswell…

Celebrate by watching Breakaway? I take the day off and watch as much of first season as possible… I start at around 6.00am and just keep on going… Mind you, the wine doesn’t start until much later in the day. 🙂

(Who’s still editing Pat’s book, about to (hopefully) start editing another S99 book, is writing two S99 books himself (really, two?), who always appreciates Steve F.’s kind plugs, and is eagerly awaiting the final drafts of Phoenix of Megaron and The Whispering Sea to start formatting — and who wonders if we’re dead, how come I’m so friggin’ busy?).
By the way, what you might want to remember this breakaway day — on breakaway day ten years ago this week, a book called Resurrection was officially announced! Yeah, it’s almost been ten years (it’ll be ten years come March of 2012, methinks).
By the way, just to add a little clarification to my earlier post, editing Pat’s book isn’t taking so long due to actual editing — it’s formatting! To put this in art terms, I’m obsessing on the frame — the actual painting is beyond cool (and I think if I scrape away the paint in one corner, I’m finding an early drawing of Da Vinci’s helicopter prototype!).

I’m missing the alternative rosepetal cover, so I’d planned to buy this version upon re-release. It’s a stunning novel. There’re so many moments of brilliance… The fight between Paul & Tony remains a highlight for me. As does the moment when Paul takes Helena hostage, walking her at lasergun point through a travel tube tunnel. Superb stuff. Utterly superb. A really, REALLY superb novel written by someone who, like me, appreciates the strengths and failings and triumphs of both seasons of the original TV series.
Saying that, [b]”Survival”[/b] is a novel very close to my heart. Of all of them, this was the novel that really excited me. Because it was the end of Year One, and the beggining of my beloved Year Two. It was the stepping stone between the two. I still remember my joy at the moment when Koenig and the others sweep through the doors of Command Centre for the first time having been forced to destroy Main Mission (emotionally, as a fan of Year One & Year Two, the destruction of Main Mission was as upsetting as the destruction of the original USS Enterprise in [b]”Star Trek III – The Search For Spock”[/b]). When Koenig picks up his Year Two jacket and Command Centre powers up… well, it was a seminal moment in Alpha’s history. And Powys revealed it to us in this novel. In style. I was beyond overjoyed at the events in this novel. & the loss of Victor… and the aftermath… so very touching. I love Year One, but Year Two bought me to [b]SPACE: 1999[/b] as a child of the 1970’s & 1980’s who was living in London in the UK & watching Year Two episodes on Saturday mornings on LWT (London Weekend Television).
The re-release of [b]”Survival”[/b] would pose far greater problems than the re-release of [b]”The Forsaken”[/b] because of the sheer number of typo’s (from memory, [b]”The Forsaken”[/b] is pretty much typo free as are several other Powys novels. The exceptions (as far as I can tell) are [b]”Android Planet”[/b] and the [b]’Year Two Omnibus[/b]). I’ve been reading little bits of [b]”Android Planet”[/b] every now and then, and getting a little further forward with the story each time I do. When I do, I forward corrections directly to Mateo, who updates them via Lulu. One day, the book will be typo-free. The [b]”Year Two Omnibus”[/b] has very few typo’s and they’re so minor, they haven’t bothered me or spoilt my enjoyment of the book at all.
If [b]”Survival”[/b] does get a re-release, I’m going to offer to send my copy, which has all the typo’s I originally found highlighted in Yellow Highlighter pen directly to Mateo by Air Mail because I’d love the second printing via Lulu to be an even bigger success than the original.
As for Artwork, I, like Pat & many others, would like to see any re-releases feature new artwork by Ken Scott. His work is quite simply, breathtaking & the addition of one of his covers can only add to the “Must Have!!” nature of any re-release.
