The similarities between us are greater than the differences? 🙂
I’ve always been amazed that the vast majority of the Space: 1999 fanbase is essentially the same age. At this point, almost everybody is either 46, 47 or 48. Something in the show’s first season struck my pre-teen brain and stuck!
46-48…the Helena’s golden locks zone

My first brushes with Space:1999 were with my older cousin’s toy Eagle spaceship. He had that big Mattel produced Eagle Transporter. That toy was the best thing in sci-fi toys till the coming of the Milllenium Falcon, TIE starfighters, X-wing starfighters, Colonial Vipers and Cylon Raiders. I cringe everytime I think of it’s fate. My cousin decided to perform his own SFX with the Eagle. He and his friends used firecrackers on the poor toy. Then to add insult to injury they crashed the Eagle into a raging bondfire! My cousin and his friends had an ‘on again-off again’ fight over which had more merit Space:1999 or classic Star Trek. I was too young to really understand the parallels and contrasts between the two shows back then. However just a few years after 1976 I remember getting into schoolyard brawls over which was better Star Wars or classic Battlestar Galactica (big grin). So I guess pissing contests happen with each generation, eh?
For years I searched for the Mattel produced Eagle to add to my growing sci-fi collection. Or barring finding that particular treasure I’d settle for Dinky produced Eagles. Never found any. Then in the summer of 1987 I was in Colorado and found the Airfix produced model kits of the Eagle and the Hawk! As you might imagine I coughed up the money and they were mine! Mine! MINE! Then fast-forward to 2005. I finally got to watch all of the Space:1999 episodes. Up to this point I only viewed the Destination Moonbase Alpha compilation movie. Then I attended the Wonderfest convention held in Louisville, KY. There was a booth dedicated to Gerry Anderson and Irwin Allen products. Again I coughed up the money and bought the nifty super-accurate Eagle variants produced by Product Enterprise Limited. Oh and the UFO Interceptor as well. Pure joy!
Then came Powys Media with NEW Space:1999 literature! GEEKGASM! Oh and let us not forget Blam Ventures getting ready to launch both digital Space:1999 comic books and traditional Space:1999 graphic novels this year! I think we’re on the brink of a mainstream rediscovery of Space:1999. Might a Space:1999 reboot film or TV show be in the cards? The reboot of Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica have paved the way. Oh and pre-production work is underway on a new UFO movie. So I’d say yes Space:1999 is likely to make its way to the small or big screen – reinvented. If not well hey we’ve got Powys Media and Blam Ventures to give us Space99ers our collective fix, eh?
