Here is a new interview with Rupert Booth. We’ll be making a page for it soon. Just thought our readers would enjoy it!

Interview with Rupert Booth
Conducted by Simon Morris

How did you come to read Spider’s Web?

Well, Vanessa Champion and I had just set up our own production company, one of the sides of which is audiobooks. I knew Mateo from a while back and we were both excited about the possibilities of recording the Powys back catalogue. Spider’s Web is the first fruit of that collaboration!

Were you familiar with Space: 1999 already?

Oh yes, I remembered it from when it was first broadcast. Though I did get hold of a few episodes to re-familiarise myself with the series when I was writing a short story, again for Powys.

How did you approach the recording sessions for Spider’s Web?

With a sort of silly sideways dance.

What other recording/acting work have you done?

Loads! Recently some voice over work for a documentary and some little comedy sketches. Though at the moment, writing is taking up all my time. Ness and I are also now working on the audiobook of “The Prisoner’s Dilemma” which is going to be fun!

You co-wrote the Prisoner novel, The Prisoner’s Dilemma, for Powys. What are you working on now?

Well, funny you mention “The Prisoner” because my big project at the moment is a biography of Patrick McGoohan which will be published in March next year (shameless plug!). I’m also working on a dramatised biography of an aviatrix and have been developing a TV series with one of the big names in comedy over here.

Whose voice opened and ended the CD of Spider’s Web?

That was Vanessa, giving it her best silky toned purr.

Did you have contact with the author, William Latham?

I certainly did and I was chuffed to ribbons at his reaction to the piece. What a nice guy!

What does it feel like to play Victor Bergman, the character made famous by Barry Morse?

Hmmm. It was a little strange I suppose, since his voice was so distinctive and so identified with the part. Plus I’m no impressionist! All I did in the end was try to suggest his inflexions sometimes. It was a lot of fun to do.

Where can we see or read more of your work?

Well, aside from “The Prisoner’s Dilemma”, I have a short Space 1999 story coming out for Powys, then there’s the McGoohan book next year and I’ve just been given a lead on another novel, an original idea that I’ve been kicking around for years with Barry Williams. And of course, there’s the next “Prisoner” book for Powys which is on the slate!

You are part of WildeyesTV. Can you tell us about that?

Yeah, Wildeyes is Ness and I, a multimedia/art/sound company with fingers in all sorts of pies at the moment and big plans for next year. We’re currently developing several TV and Radio projects as well as all the work lined up with Powys and have recently branched out into animation which is tremendous fun!

What is it like to work for that bastard at Powys? (Question suggested by Mateo Latosa)

He’s actually a lovely chap. Well, when he’s not drinking blood and sacrificing children. You couldn’t have a more supportive editor than Mateo, it’s a great pleasure to work with him. We have a lot of collaborations planned for next year!

I gonna go out on a limb and assume chuffed to ribbons is a good thing? Honestly, it sounds painful.

I’m also happy to say I just got shipping notice from Lulu. And THIS one I can listen to in the car!
