Shepherd Moon came Friday (impressively quickly) and, like my 12 year-old observed, “Mom, you look like you really like that book.” Such an understatement.

    Non-spoiler thoughts…

I had to read slowly. This is a good thing. I read Dune books quickly and skip whole chunks of Kathy Reichs books. Spider’s Web had me going through it almost methodically, and certainly had me pondering earlier stories. The end of SW literally had me calling out, “Holy cow!” Not the most sophisticated response, but you get the point.

Thanks for Fallen Star. It was satisfying in the way having a cavity filled is – no more uncertainty or pain, but things are left just a touch less than perfect.

Poor Helena. If she were to throw herself out an airlock, it seems there would be a line of people holding the door for her.

This is not Freddie’s universe (with one notable exception). Trying to reconcile some of these scenes with the opening scene of, say, One Moment of Humanity, is difficult. Again, this is a good thing. Each side of my brain likes each season for a different reason, but my whole brain enjoyed Shepherd Moon.

I think I’m seeing more of the arc and I will withhold my thoughts on it for now, but I will say a chess board figures prominently in those thoughts.

Again, congratulations to Mateo and company for bring this and everything else to fruition. Please don’t stop.

    Pat.

Well, I think I speak for all of us when I say: A post like that makes it all worthwhile! Thanks! And we are happy that you liked the book!

I’m enjoying the book too, but I’m going rather more slowly. I’m just halfway through Futility, which is building into a splendid story. In fact, all the stories so far have made an impact on me – although I must say I felt the Brian Ball offering was a little weak; compared to the others, it didn’t really go anywhere.

I have some very minor nitpicking concerning continuity with the series in a couple of stories which I shall raise here eventually, but in no way has my enjoyment been impaired. This is a great book.
