If Mateo wants another one now that the company’s back up, I’d be up for that like a shot.

Got to be careful what I say about the book cos I don’t want to give any spoilers away but it was really, really good. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’d love to go into it in detail but this is not the place !!

Catherine Schell said in her Foreword that it could have been ‘made into a film’ and I agree totally…

    I can’t believe you were worried…

I think we all have our own vision of Moonbase Alpha and what life would have been like up there. Well I know I have and I love stories that stay ‘true’ to that vision.

You wrote Born or Adversity with such an understanding…it played out in my mind so easily…I loved it!

First time writing for a franchise, I always worry if I’ve captured it right…

Especially here, where the two seasons are so different, and so many fans hate season 2. (though I guess BFA’s tone is taken from how I think season 2 *should* have gone…)

I just received it and so far I’m absolutely captivated. I think you got it just right!

I also enjoyed Catherine Schell’s Forward, and I even skipped to her Afterward. Based on her comments she loved this book and enjoyed the realistic portrayal of the relationships that couldn’t be developed to that extent on 1970s television.

    Awesome book so far!

David, first time? Haven’t you written for DOCTOR WHO before? I’m sure you have. And pretty good books they are too. Unless I have the wrong David!?

Anyway really really really enjoyed this book. I read it fast and it has a lot of action…as a second seasoner that is appropriate or to follow that. BUT the action makes sense and has different slants on say the Eagle crash or a fight scene near a travel tube. Really well done stuff. I want to say more but I don’t want to SPOIL anything. I like how you brought back a certain character or two and like how Maya’s background is played into it. I also like, for once in a 1999 book, the resolutionS you give your plot. I also like “the view from above” too rather than the basement if you know what I mean.

All in all, I think this is the first Powyrs 1999 book I really love!

I posted this already but whatever: here goes again: There is one thing I do not like about this book and it concerns how Maya is left at the end but I don’t want to spoil the book by saying what it is yet.

No, that’s right – but it’s my first time doing Space 1999

I basically wanted the action stuff to be properly epic – like, this is how a Year two element *should* have been done, if they had a producer who really had a love for the show, and an unlimited budget…

I can see that – it was part of the brief for the story arc, so I’ll dodge the blame, but I think the fact there has been a development means things can be taken in new directions, and that very opinion explored in the series…

    SPOILERS!!!

What I liked most about Born For Adversity was the depth of storytelling and familiarity with Y1 and Y2 precedent. The book doesn’t have a dull moment, takes characters through an action-packed progression of post Year 2 development, and contains mind-bending ideas about what happened to David Kano– which really blew me away. The author’s apparent familiarity with the latest computer science helped make it all so believable.

I also liked the continued existence of Psyche, the relationship of Psychon evolution to Psyche and the mystery of Psyche’s existence. Surrounding this Maya confronts what are some of the most profound and meaningful events in her life, and the changes which have taken place within her will be interesting to explore in future novels. In the TV series there was not enough development of Maya, Psychons or their culture/spirituality, and the author has taken steps to finally rectify this.

I enjoyed seeing familiar Y2 characters interwoven throughout, and liked the large role for security guard Quinton who was in both seasons of Space:1999, but never named on screen, just in credits. I also liked the consideration of previous alien encounters from the series, and the pivotal role Dorzak played in this novel. Besides Kano, other important Year 1 characters like Victor Bergman haven’t been forgotten, and Victor’s relationship to John and Helena continues to support them at critical junctures, if only in their memory.

This epic is an important part of Space:1999 development and is written in such a cinematic style that it should have been a movie. If the intent was to portray the action of Y2 with the depth of Y1 then this book is a huge success!!!!

    SPOILERS

Definately enjoyed Born For Adversity. Not only did it explain a few open story threads concerning Maya’s brother, the fates of David Kano, Dorzak, and Sahala(which I wish did not happen), but also tied up those loose ends.

Overall, it was an excellent opening to the Year Three novels. This is definately the third season that fans wanted back in 1977.

I’m definately looking forward to more Third Season adventures.

So, in closing, I would like to say the following.

Look out Star Trek and Star Wars, here we come! Space:1999 is back and the future is even more fantastic!

    I almost forgot.

I kind of expected what became of David Kano and his fate. I’m definately looking forward to the next novel or short story that explains what led up that event beforehand.

Dunno about latest – my qualifications in SSADM are now about 15 years out of date – but I guess that just makes them a little more in keeping with 1999 technology!
