3 new books – where will I find the space to put them… Well done to the Powys team and the wider Powys community for your efforts in bringing a little more Space 1999 our way. Now, stop dilly dallying and get those books to Lulu so we can place our orders. 🙂 How can one happy dance otherwise. 😉

The last piece of the puzzle has now been delivered.

Once this is inserted into the formatted Powysverse Compendium, we’ll order a proof copy. If everything is in its place, it will be published immediately.

Phoenix of Megaron just needs to be formatted, its cover adjusted for the actual final spine-width, then we’ll order a proof copy…you know the rest!

I was wondering what people would think of that.
I was wondering what people would think of that.
when you first mentioned wrap around art, I thought you meant that Ken Scott’s beautiful blue Megaron would cross over the spine and fill up the back cover as well. Seemed like an odd choice to have full artwork for the first time on this particular book.
The direction you’ve actually taken though, I am totally on board with – I absolutely love the homage to the original paperback!

I’ve never been a fan of artwork that crosses the spine and continues onto the back of the book, to be honest. And yes, by wraparound, I simply meant the back cover, spine and front cover.

I’ve tried to have our books look like the 70s US releases to a certain extent. I love them, but we needed to distinguish the new books from the original releases. Hence, black back covers and spines instead of white and purple (though Breakaway had a black spine).

We couldn’t use the stars’ photos, and the logos were different of course. We did choose to put the title on the back cover (not exactly the only books to do so). We decided to include a sort of “poetic” description of the plots and a “boiler plate” paragraph of the premise of the series (book and television), including a phrase from Shakespeare, no less.

For the front cover, we wanted to have an Eagle over the logo–another hommage to the original books. I’ve never liked the Eagle used on the US books. “Parts” were missing! So Martin Willey suggested and/or provided the Eagle we eventually used. The starfield behind the Eagle was a late addition, we originally just figured using black would suggest shadows rather than “parts missing”. The addition of stars was a logical development.

The titles are laid out in a similar fashion, though right-aligned and–for some reason that escapes me–all the words of the subtitle begin in CAPS. Carlton wondered why. Now I do.

I decided NOT to number the books because we knew that the books would not be published in Alphan chronological order, but that fans would want to put them that way on their shelves.

Finally, apologies, but I’ve never liked the array of colors used on on the UK releases. When I met with the printer to discuss the project the very first time. I brought a copy of the novelization of the first X Files film, Fight the Future, and said, I want it to look like this!

Printing Phoenix with a red spine has always been the plan, however. I asked Ken to match it as closely as possible. I wish I knew why it had a red spine in the 70s!

Well, seeing as PoM will have a red spine as a hommage to the original novelisation, is the same true of AP? Was the spine of the original novel black?

No, they were all purple except for the first book, Breakaway (black) and the last book, Phoenix of Megaron (red).

It always bugged me that Pocket used a picture of an Eagle with pieces missing and the weak airbrushing of the undercarriage. But I guess that was *the* picture to use – it was the cover of the giant brochure, cover of the LP, giant puzzle on the back of the Donruss cards, etc. Too bad it wasn’t just a little bit better lit.

I’ve thought that ever since, but who really knows?

I really like that you kept the red spine. As for red, maybe it was the Phoenix/fire association. Maybe.
