I always forgive these little mistakes in 1999 episodes and books.
The episodes were written and rewritten so fast, so many fingers in the pie. The books have to match the dodgy science that “too many cooks” spoiled.
Having lived through metric conversion in the 70s I have no problem with either system and don’t even notice the change from one to the other.
I would like the books to be perfect in every way but then we would have nothing to nit-pick at, and the forum would be a boring place. 🙂January 26, 2011 at 4:46 pm #1799Ally DaviesParticipantUltra – great observations – you obviously know what you’re talking about 🙂

Mateo – if I were you I’d bite his hand off 😆 seriously – how many rocket scientists do you have offering you the benefit of their vast knowledge.

When I first read it ( nearly a year ago now ) I thoroughly enjoyed BfA. I know nothing about velocity or the ins and outs of flying an Eagle etc etc, so Ultras quibbles would… and did go straight over my head.
And
the continual swapping between English and Metric units
didn’t bother me either, here in the UK its normal !!
The characterizations were really solid as well. For the most part I could hear the actors saying the words as written.
…and for me that’s what it’s all about – the characterisation – so many sp1999 writers ( professional or amateur ) overlook key points of nuance and subtlety in their characterisation, which then have a major impact on the whole essence of their work. In my opinion sp1999 ( year one more so than year 2 ) was so much about the characters and the way they, the Alphans, adapted to their situation. BfA, just like Resurrection left me satisfied that the writers understood the characters, their predicament and the ‘new world’ they found themselves inhabiting.
BfA as a new sp1999 publication…made me very happy – so all you’ll hear from me is wild applause…and a cry of ‘encore’…
I think Zack sums it up perfectly…

I second this (but, truth be told, I miss my favourite Metamorph, even if she is now “Maya – The Woman” & “Maya – The Figure of Tragedy” rather than “Maya – The Shape Changing Gimmick that earned SPACE: 1999 a second season” 🙁
There is that! I never even thought about it, it’s just natural here.

If so… Yay! B) Great fan of your Doctor Who novels (e.g Shadow of Weng-Chiang, Sanctuary, The Eleventh Tiger, The Face of the Enemy, White Darkness etc. to name but a few I’ve bought over the years!).
Of course… if you’re not Mr McIntee… I’m making a fool of myself! Haha! 😉 😛

Yes. Lonemagpie’s the name I have on Livejournal and the TrekBBS so I figured i’d keep it here as well.
Glad you liked them – especially those middle three, which are my favourites!

No, you’re not making a fool of yourself – though I’d usually say “Mr McIntee’s my dad…”

An absolute pleasure to have an opportunity to say how much I’ve enjoyed reading your books over the years. You were one of the real “finds” (new writers-wise) when Virgin started publishing the Doctor Who “New Adventures” line of novels imho. I bought each and everyone of your books… right up to “The Eleventh Tiger”. Correct me if I’m wrong David, but wasn’t that your last Doctor Who novel? Why haven’t you written any since? I think I’ve only ever disliked 2 of your books (“Autumn Mist” & “Mission Impractical”) but the others… are brilliant. “The Eleventh Tiger” is hands down my favourite. But “The Shadow of Weng-Chiang” was also a delight, but then, any novel ffeaturing Tom Baker’s Doctor, Mary Tamm’s Romana and K9 mark II was bound to go down well with… well, with pretty much everyone! The only one I missed out on when it was first released was “The Dark Path” with Patrick Troughton’s Doctor meeting Roger Delgado’s Master. I paid A LOT of money to get hold of a copy in Near Mint condition. I’m delighted to report it was worth every penny! 🙂
I was delighted when I first heard rumours you were going to bring down the curtain on Year 2 and set the Powysverse SPACE: 1999 novels up for Year 3.
Have you approached Mateo with the possibility of contributing a short story for the forthcoming “Prodigal Moon” short story anthology?
HUGE RESPECT and gratitude to you for writing so many novels that I’ve thoroghly enjoyed over the years. You’re a very talented writer imo and I hope there’ll be many more original novels released with your name on them in the future 🙂

I’m not really a short story writer if I can avoid it…
February 1, 2011 at 4:15 pm #1857Steve FosterParticipantThat’s a shame (re: you not being a Short Story writer) and as for not writing any more original Who novels, again, your reasoning makes sense. I’ve enjoyed reading several of the newer, hard cover novels based on the new series (I thought “Prisoner of the Daleks” by Trevor Baxendale was quite superb!) but yes, they do tend to lack… a certain something.
Still, what a high note to go out on! (“The Eleventh Tiger”). Quite superb!
Still, one can only hope you’ll write something Who-related again one day 🙂 and if we’re lucky, another novel set in the SPACE: 1999 universe too B)

Anything’s possible – though I have to confess that the one 1999 idea I really fancy doing requires Maya to be a shapeshifter, so there’s a certain irony involved…

April 4, 2011 at 7:38 pm #2133lemarignier nicolasParticipantHello,
I’ve just finished read “Born for Adversity” and I wanted to congratulate the author. TMHO, he’s found a very clever way to deal with the power of transformation of the Psychons (without needing silly hairy monsters), the abandoned Main Mission, the lovelife of Tony and Maya, the merging of new spaceships… etc etc….
So if the author reads this, I have just one question : have you got another novel in preparation ?

Not Space 1999, though I did just have a Star Trek novel come out last month…
I’d certainly love to do another S1999 story if a slot for one comes available at Powys.
