At some point, a follow-up to Shepherd Moon is going to be released. In
preparation for that, we’d like to do something a little different.

We’re going to ask you to pick an author for us from the world of fan fiction writers.

Here’s how it’s going to work. Please respond to this topic nominating one
fan fiction author whose work you particularly admire (yes, you can even
nominate yourself). We’re going to ask our registered users to only
nominate one person, or second the nomination of someone who has already
been nominated (i.e., if an author you admire has already been nominated,
just post a reply saying “I second the nomination of so-and-so”). There can be multiple “seconding” responses (and this will increase the likelihood that an author will hit the final tally) but please — only one vote per registered user (whether it’s a primary nomination or a seconding nomination).

Once we have compiled a list of names, we’ll set up a poll to gather actual
    votes.

    RULES

    1. The author/authors nominated are under no obligation to actually do
anything for us — so you might want to contact them first and ask them if
it’s okay to nominate them. If a nominated author asks us to remove their name, we WILL remove their name.
    2. Powys and the author/authors may not be able to come to an agreement
over a story. We will attempt to contact the author/authors and “make
something happen” but there is no guarantee here.
    3. DO NOT under any circumstances post any content about their stories,
    particularly plot lines.
    4. Powys reserves the right to make the final decisions!
    5. Please keep your nominating posts short — the name of the author is fine
    — no more information is required (and will slow down the tabulation
    process).
    6. You should (obviously) nominate only authors who have written Space:1999
fiction — just because someone writes fan fiction doesn’t necessarily mean
    they’ve written Space:1999 fiction.

If you have questions regarding the process, please post them under this topic. We’ll be putting up the poll around June 1st, so please have your nominations in by then.

No, it simply brings the thread to the top of the list again. It is a common ‘trick’ to bring something back to the forefront and avoid letting it get overlooked by newer discussions.

Mateo~ given how light the nominations have been, would it be possible to put in a second name? Or would anyone else, just perhaps, care to hear of a recommendation for him/her to toss in?

    Cricket…I just don’t understand it…

are we the only ones who read fanfiction…?

I’ve a long list of writers I could have nominated. Ellen is a great writer BUT there are so many others whose work I really enjoy…

I was hard pressed to choose a favourite and am puzzeled at the lack of response

I don’t read fan fiction as a rule–I CAN’T for obvious reasons. In fact, the only fan fiction I have read was Emma Burrows’s New Moon Over Bajor. It was released to Online Alpha in installments, once every two weeks or so. I couldn’t wait for the next installment! I don’t remember the details of the plot now (other than it being a 1999/DS9 crossover). On the strength of that memory I commissioned a story from Emma for Shepherd Moon.

It’s still early days, but I feel I can reveal that the title of the next anthology will be PRODIGAL MOON.

PRODIGAL, eh? According to which definition, or a play on both? Food for thought.

Anyway, this thread has gotten 4 replies with three nominees. 4 replies – that’s like, 5% of the registered membership. Sort of like a school budget election, when 95% of people complain afterward when the vote doesn’t go like they wanted it to. Maybe registered users are not familiar with the genre; therefore, would a formal poll accurately reflect a consensus?

Two of the authors mentioned are active, talented, and probably willing to contribute. So…chocolate or vanilla? How about a scoop of both, or a twisty soft-serve collaboration? Even butter pecan fans can’t complain too much. Ice cream is ice cream – in general, it’s all good. (Except, as James Thurber notes, peach. It’s never as good as you think it’s going to be  .)

    Just my unsolicited opinion.

    -Pat.

Edit – I should note that all three are talented writers, but only two seem to actively writing S:19 fanfic currently. Don’t want to step on any toes…

I have never had a favourite fan fic writer in the 1999 universe. Every single one has always disappointed me in one way or another. I haven’t nominated anyone for that reason. I’m happy to read anything Powys puts out because, so far, the stories have fit into my own 1999 framework beautifully. I’m sure that anyone that Mateo gets to write a short story will be given a brief on what direction their story needs to take in order to fit the Powysverse so I will be happy to read whatever is on offer.
