I like what Jace Hall is saying here and think the new show could be a must see: Jace Hall on Space: 2099
February 16, 2012 at 2:44 am #2504JohnParticipantI’m really excited about this here brand-new Space:2099 television series. As long as it stays in essence true to the basic look and gothic tone of the classic series. Some ways the new series might improve on the old series are…
1. Update the plot device that sends the moon away from Earth orbit. How?
A. Deep underground – perhaps at the center of the moon – Moonbase Alpha techs are experimenting with a advanced new particle accelrator – one that can form gravitational singularties. An accident or act of terrorism causes the moon to warp away.
2. Eagle design changes?
A. Replace the bell-shaped thrusters with a more angular style thrusters.
B. The aft end should be higher and a gradual slope to the nose cone – thus giving the new Eagle a vague souped up hot-rod feel.
C. The back landing gear pods should be larger than the front landing gear pods. The poster does suggest that the front landing gear pods extend forward with a VTOL like blower.
3. Personal hand laser guns
A. Keep the classic shape, but bulk them up slightly with detachable components (eye scopes, battery units). Perhaps a bit like some of the ‘weirding way’ sonic guns seen in David Lynch’s Dune movie.
4. Uniforms
A. Make more disctinction between the clothing worn by scientists, engineers, military officers and civilians.
5. Moonbase Alpha population number
A. Perhaps instead of a mere 311 people – increase the population to 3011.
6. Moonbase Alpha design
A. If they do increase the size of the Alpha population then the base likely will be much larger. Perhaps the size of NY city.
7. Ranks and roles
A. Moonbase Alpha is not a starship. The main characters should be more diverse in careers. More like the leaders of a city with its various departments run by civilians. a group of military officers would be in place to counter terrorism or rebel attacks by rogue Martian / Jovian colonies.
B. Koenig should be a mayor or governor instead of a millitary rank.
Well that’s my 2 credits worth of thinking for today…

There’s nothing wrong in that & the design alterations you’ve suggested would probably make a lot of sense from a technical point of view. To be honest though, I think the designs of the moonbase, the Eagles & the Hawks etc. are AWESOME. I’d really rather they were left as they are.
Aside from the design/tech side of things, I’d be interested to hear what you’d do re: the characters.
Yes, make Koenig a Mayor or a Governor. Fair enough. But what would that *add* to the *character* of John Koenig that isn’t already there? It sounds less militaristic, but other than that, I can’t see that it would bring anything to the character that isn’t already there in the original series and that is being expanded upon in the novels.
Mayor Koenig would still have to deal with the same s*it day in day out on Alpha, irrespective of his rank or title (& Commander Koenig does sound so much better than Governor Koenig! LOL! 😉
Saying that, the re-location/Exodus to “Terra Alpha” in “Message from Moonbase Alpha” was “greatly disputed” (according to Sandra) so perhaps by that point in Alpha’s history, Koenig is seen more as a community leader rather than a Commander and that decisions on Alpha are made by consensus rather than by him from his seat in the Commander’s Office so perhaps by then, he’s “Commander” in name only, but his role is quite different by that point to the one he had in Year 1 & 2…
