Earlier in the year, there was a discussion about whether or not the Pocket Books 7 thru 10 were part of the timeline established by Powys.
I can understand #10 – PHONEIX OF MEGARON not being canon because of the character of Rhoda joing the Alphans. It wouldn’t fit in with the established continuity.
Anyway, Since it has been established by Gerry Anderson Productions and Carlton Communications that the Powys Timeline is the ‘official timeline'(i.e. Official Space:1999 canon), do the comic books and comic magazines from Charlton Comics, as well as the Power Records story Return To The Beginning, fit into the established timeline? Are they considered a part of the timeline/canon?
*The aforementioned publications also came out in the Seventies, in ase anybody was wondering.
Interesting questions. The Powysverse timeline is Powys’s official timeline.
It doesn’t (at present) take into account the comics or comic magazines. Nor does it take into account the Return to the Beginning or the 1970s Charlton anthology (in book form) called, simply, Space: 1999. This is not to say I don’t like the stories. Some are fantastic–and I mean that in the word’s original meaning of being of a fantasy nature, but a number are quite interesting and fun. I have a great fondness for them.
That said, I am not of the opinion that EVERYTHING ever written must be included in any overarching timeline. I think it’s simply unworkable and often contradictory.
The Powysverse (at present) includes all 49 episodes (including MFMBA). It does not include the Earth scenes from the compilation “movies”. It includes all the Powys releases (always in the latest editions).
More closely, the events of Year Two as depicted in the YEAR TWO omnibus do not necessarily match what happened onscreen exactly. Unlike Star Trek where ONLY what happens on screen is canon. Powys is attempting to create a unified, internally consistent, LITERARY saga. So changes were made to the Y2 episodes to fill in a few plot holes, correct a few mistakes, provide connections backwards to earlier events and foreshadow future ones.
Ultimately, if you bound all the Powys material into one huge, back-breaking, hardcover volume, it would be some 4000 pages long. If you read it from one end to the other–we hope you’d feel it was all of a kind. An Alphan odyssey.

Ah, the Charlton comics, you’ve brought back some fond memories. Mostly of being a child on a treasure hunt trying to find them. It seemed like the only places I would see them would be when the family was out on vacation, typically when we went to visit my grandparents in FL. Even then it was a sketchy proposition, though. (Couldn’t drive yet, so I was at my parent’s mercy for comic shopping as it was.) I’d be surprised if I even have four of them.
Really liked the ones I found though. I seem to remember one where the Alphans were in an intergalatic zoo, and another where the aliens had a split personality of sorts. Good one minute, attacking you the next. Some cool concepts.
Ebay was a great help in locating a full set of the both sets of comics. I also had the luck of being the only ‘hard core’ 1999 fan in my area so the dealers and shop owners would always contact me first to see if I wanted something before it hit their shelves. I must dig out the comics and give them a re-read along with the other original books. 🙂
